Library installed security cameras
Letter to the editor
To the editor:
Sometimes the thing that has to be done is not the thing that one wants to do.
That is what the Jay County Public Library faced with a recent decision.
We have been blessed with a wonderful facility and resources that have enriched the lives of those in Jay County.
But, unfortunately, we have seen an increase in vandalism of the building by our patrons. We have also seen an increase in violations of our public behavior policy.
Library staff are unable to directly supervise all areas of the building at all times. With this in mind, we have installed a video camera surveillance system to help ensure that our building is protected and our patrons are safe. We hope to provide peace of mind to library users and staff by discouraging violations of the library’s code of conduct.
Know that this system will be used in a way that protects patron privacy while at the same time will give our staff a tool for dealing effectively with inappropriate behavior. It is also helpful for us when you are in our building and you see something of concern, to not hesitate to say something to one of our staff.
While we might not like why we have to do this, I hope that taking this step will allow all to enjoy our building in a safe and comfortable atmosphere.
