A Portland store was honored this month as one of the best in its company.

True Value in Portland was recognized as “Best Hardware Store in Town” for its region during the company’s “Spring Reunion” last week in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The store, owned by David and Jenny Bricker, was selected from more than 500 stories in its region. It was one of 13 regional winners that were up for the national award, which went to the store in Westhampton, New York.

The Brickers have owned the store since 2012.

More solar

Indiana Michigan Power has received approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to build and operate its largest solar generation facility to date. It will be located in St. Joseph County, working with the University of Notre Dame.

“The solar facility will allow I&M customers and the entire Michiana area to take advantage of local green resources and assist local economic development efforts to attract businesses that are interested in renewable energy options,” Toby Thomas, I&M president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement.

“I&M is transforming our generation fleet, and this project ensures a bright future for our customers and our communities we serve.”

The utility has reduced its total CO2 emissions more than 60% in the last decade, and more than half of I&M’s generation fleet is now emission free. The new solar facility builds on I&M’s commitment to a sustainable future.

The new solar facility will have a capacity of 20 megawatts — enough energy to power 2,700 homes annually. Construction is set to start in April, and the facility is expected to be in operation in late fall 2020.

I&M already operates four solar generation facilities. Three are in Indiana — Marion, Mishawaka and New Carlisle — and one in Watervliet, Michigan.

Free app

Baird-Freeman Funeral Home is making a free emergency app available to the local community at no charge

The Vital ICE (In Case of Emergency) app can be downloaded from either the Apple App Store or Google Play. Those downloading should enter in their code: #1887.

Users of the app fill in emergency information that can then be accessed by first responders. The information could then be sent from an ambulance directly to a hospital emergency room.

Good year

Ardagh Group, parent of glass container manufacturing plants in Dunkirk and Winchester, reported “significant progress” in 2019.

Paul Coulson, chairman and chief executive, said the company’s metal packaging and European glass packaging units were particularly strong.

“Class Packaging North America successfully stabilized earnings,” Coulson reported. “The sustainability-driven demand backdrop for our infinitely recyclable products remains favorable and we look to further progress in 2020."
