It was an eventful birthday weekend
As I See It
By Diana Dolecki-
Gracie, the calico cat, has gone over to the dark side. She has gotten skinny in her old age. She misjudges distances, which often results in a panicked look on her face as she scrambles to land on whatever she was intending to. She also hurls hairballs on a regular basis. These are placed strategically so that I will step on them on the way to the bathroom.
None of this is why I think she has joined the forces of evil. I was cleaning up her latest offering, which happened to land on the couch. When I removed one of the cushions to clean it, I found the Nerf bullet. As I have yet to find a Nerf gun, the only logical conclusion is that she is busy designing a weapon that she can control with her paws.
She maintains that she is retired. No longer will she monitor the house for hungry chipmunks or any other wildlife that may invade her home. Yes, I said her home, not ours. Anyone who shares a house with a cat knows that they are somewhat delusional. They believe that people were created as servants who provide food, water and clean litter. Wait, maybe she is right. We do provide her all that.
I took the soft bullet away from the cat and intend to include it with granddaughter Emma’s birthday present. I find it hard to believe that Emma is 14 already. They grow up so fast.
She had quite the birthday party Saturday. She invited several girls over for a sleepover. As with any good sleepover, there was very little sleeping involved. It was an all girl party. The boys were banished to what they refer to as the deer lease. This is a bit of land where they can camp out and hunt for deer and also do a little fishing.
The girls were left behind to enjoy several different games that had everybody laughing. Since they were in Texas, guns were mandatory.
After a shaky beginning, they all participated in an AirSoft shootout. They were outfitted with helmets and/or safety glasses. They all got into the spirit of it soon enough and had a great time.
Things were beginning to wind down when daughter, Beth, received a phone call from her husband. He works for an ambulance service and they had just received a call about the little boy across the street. Beth was just getting out of the shower when her husband called and asked her to find out what was going on.
She threw on some clothes and went across the street. The little boy who lives there was having a seizure. Beth got the mom calmed down as much as possible. I don’t think she realized it, but as she told the story her she spoke slower and lower. It was what she was taught to do to calm people down.
The ambulance came and their personnel took over. Beth told the parents that she would take care of the other kids while they went to the hospital. The mom started to protest and Beth reminded her that she had an entire houseful of girls who would be more than happy to play with the little sister and the baby.
By the time the neighbors came home, the girls were more than ready for the slumber part of the party. The little boy was OK as were his siblings. I’m guessing that will be one party that nobody will forget.
It is probably a good thing that Gracie only has one bullet and lives in Indiana instead of Texas. I can’t see her being around that much chaos without finding a good hiding space to wait it out until everyone returned home.
All in all, it was an eventful weekend for the birthday girl and her friends. Even though the neighbors weren’t invited to the party, I doubt if they will forget it either.
