In their final meetings as rivals, the Chiefs were in control against the Eagles.

East Jay Middle School’s girls basketball teams won both games Monday at Jay County High School with victories over West Jay by a 43-15 score in the eighth grade game and 24-7 in the seventh grade game.

It was the final meeting between the squads before the county’s seventh and eighth graders come together at the high school building, which will become Jay County Junior-Senior High School in 2020-21.

Sophie Saxman paced the eighth grade Chiefs (8-2) with a dozen points. Danielle May, Cash Hollowell and Molly Muhlenkamp each added six.

Laila Waddel scored 11 of West Jay’s 15 points.

Cassie Petro matched Saxman by scoring 12 points for the East Jay seventh graders (7-3). Daisy Muhlenkamp was next with six points.

The Eagles got five of their seven points from Kiley Williams.



FR streak ends

OTTAWA, Ohio — The Division IV No. 10 Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team’s seven-game winning streak came to an end Saturday with a 54-41 loss to the host Ottawa-Glandorf Titans.

Indians (9-3), who had not lost since falling Dec. 6 at Jay County, trailed 16-9 in the opening quarter and were unable to recover. The teams played even in the second quarter before Ottawa-Glandorf (11-1) outscored the Tribe in each of the final two periods to pull away for the win.

Chloee Glenn and Brianna Schimmoeller each scored a dozen points to lead the Titans to the win.

Whitley Rammel’s 10 points were the team high for FRHS.



Chiefs split

East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team cruised to a 39-13 victory Monday over visiting Hagerstown. The seventh graders lost 31-26 to the Tigers.

Sam Myers totaled 10 points to lead the eighth graders, who improved to 3-5. Wesley Bihn added eight points, Abraham Dirksen scored seven and Luke Vormohr finished with six.

Brenden Runyon also had 10 points as he led the seventh graders (2-7). Eli Dirksen followed with seven points.

Tribe bounces back

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery boys basketball team controlled the first half Saturday and held off Wapakoneta for a 36-31 victory.

The Indians (8-3), who were coming off of a 53-47 overtime loss Friday to Division IV No. 6 St. John’s, rolled out to a 23-12 lead in the first half. It was the second straight weekend in which they bounced back Saturday from a conference loss the previous day.

Clay Schmitz powered Fort Recovery, scoring 12 of his game-high 17 points in the opening half. Derek Jutte added seven points.

Wapakoneta got a team-best 12 points from Noah Ambos.

FRHS, which was 18th in Associated Press Division IV poll voting last week, was not listed in this week’s poll that was released Monday.
