Bonnie Liechty
Obituaries
Bonnie L. Liechty, 66, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at her residence on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.
Bonnie was born in Reno, Nevada, on June 9, 1953, to the late John S. McKinnell and Mary L. (Baird) Young.
She had been a waitress for Back 40 Junction for 10 years and Don Hall’s Factory in Fort Wayne for 15 years, and retired in 2011.
Bonnie had an extreme love of animals and was particularly passionate about cats and would provide any stray cat a loving home. Her cats gave her comfort and were a source of great companionship.
Bonnie’s “happy place” was Indiana Beach and Monticello, Indiana. For decades, Bonnie was the unofficial ambassador for Indiana Beach. Her wealth of knowledge about the amusement park and its history was evident with her postings on the Indiana Beach History Facebook page. Bonnie was always enthusiastic and very willing in sharing her knowledge to help other visitors enjoy IB as much as she and her family had over the years.
When Indiana Beach was sold to other owners, that didn’t stop Bonnie from continuing her love and support for the park. To Bonnie, the mystique and soul of IB was much bigger than whoever owned the park. It was her mission to keep alive the spirit and dreams of the original owners that Indiana Beach was a family park.
Bonnie’s favorite thing about Indiana Beach wasn’t the rides, the shows or the food. It was the quality time she was able to spend with her family staying in Cottage #1 and hanging around the pool. She truly loved the family atmosphere of Indiana Beach and wanted everyone to experience what she and her family had for several decades.
She is survived by two sons, Mark E. Liechty of Decatur and Michael K. Liechty of Fort Wayne; a brother, Gary L. McKinnell of Gainsville, Florida; a sister, Patty A. Bye of Portland; a grandson, Dylan; a granddaughter, Micah; a nephew, Jason Bye; and a niece, Melissa Bye.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eric Liechty, at birth; and a sister, Evelyn McKinnel, at birth.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy and Zelt Funeral Home, with visitation two hours prior from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Charles Myers. Burial will be in Alberson Cemetery at a later date.
Preferred memorials are to P.A.W.S. of Adams County.
