Joe Schlegel, 72, Dunkirk, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2020 at Life’s Journey of Avon following an illness.
Born in Dunkirk on April 6, 1947, he was a graduate of Dunkirk High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired after 29 years of service with the Indiana National Guard and Army Reserve. Joe worked at Kerr Glass (now Ardagh), Dunkirk, for 37 years before retiring in 2003 and was a longtime member of Dunkirk Church of The Nazarene.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Schlegel (wife: Melody), Indianapolis; two brothers, John Schlegel (wife: Barbara) and Daniel Schlegel (wife: Michele); three sisters, Lois Pardue, Wilma Causey (husband: John) and Anna Mae Strickland; a brother-in-law, Bill West; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Morton and Lucile (Benefiel) Schlegel; four brothers, Chester Schlegel, Donald Schlegel, Charles Schlegel and Henry Lee Schlegel; five sisters, Margaret Johnson, Mary Spade, Ruth Oliver, Janice Schlegel and Frances Williams West.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at Dunkirk Church of The Nazarene. Burial with military rites will follow at Antioch Cemetery south of Portland.
Visiting hours are Saturday from 1 until 3 p.m. at the church.
