And the finalists are …

Jay County Chamber of Commerce announced finalists — they featured several previous winners and a double nomination for a local business — for this year’s Jay County Community Awards at its annual meeting Thursday at Jay Community Center.

Two-time Citizen of the Year winner Cindy Denney — she earned the award once individual and also as a member of the Don Denney family — is up for Lifetime Achievement this year. Joining her as nominees for that award are Millie Ellis and Carol Smith.

Also up for a repeat award this year is Valentine Feed and Supply for business of the year, which it won in 2015. Fuqua Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM is also a nominee for the award following owners Rock and Kathy Fuqua winning the Lifetime Achievement honor last year and the Dunkirk Community Commitment award in 2015.

Pennville Custom Cabinetry, which was named Industry of the Year in 2005, is a finalist for both the Industry of the Year and Innovator of the Year awards. FCC is another industry of the year finalist after winning the award in 2002, 2016 and 2018.

The complete finalist list is as follows:

Lifetime Achievement — Cindy Denney, Millie Ellis and Carol Smith

Citizen of the Year — Vicki Daniels, Janet Bantz, Drew Houck and Ron Laux

Business of the Year — Valentine Feed and Supply, Deer Park Boutique and Fuqua Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM

Industry of the Year — Jay County REMC, FCC and Pennville Custom Cabinetry

Not for Profit of the Year — Jay County Humane Society, Meridian Health Services and Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition

Young Professional of the Year — Dr. Joseph Vormohr, Kyle Love, Tracy Carpenter and Kayla Darby

Dunkirk Community Commitment — Darrin and Eleathia Harding, Logan Nelson and Jack Robbins

Innovator of the Year — Donald Cooke II, Sculpt Fitness and Pennville Custom Cabinetry

Small Community Commitment — Mark Leavell, Brian Adair and Bert Quakenbush

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. March 19 at Jay County Event Center.

Nominations were accepted from the public through early December. The chamber’s board then selected the finalists, and chamber members will now vote for the winners.

In addition to the community award finalists, Manwaring presented Pat Jellison with a plaque for 30 years of service as a chamber employee. Also honored were outgoing chamber board members Chris Braun, Zach Chenoweth, Millie Ellis and Ryan Suman.

Manwaring and outgoing president Ryan Suman acknowledged the turmoil of 2019 — the year saw chamber executive director Dean Sanders leave for another opportunity in June and then his successor Carey Cook wash out of the job in less than five months — and gave an update on the search for a new executive director.

The hiring committee, made up of Staci Paxson, Tami Vormohr and Tina Elliott, has met once and will meet again by the end of the month to finalize a job description for the position. That will then be presented to the full board for approval before the position is advertised.

“There is no timeline,” said Manwaring. “We’re not going to push this. We’re going to find the right person.”

The chamber also honored the following organization for years of service:
