BLUFFTON — A couple of months made a huge difference.

The Jay County High School wrestling team, which placed fourth in the conference duals in early December, claimed four individual titles Friday night as it won the Allen County Athletic Conference Championships with 233.5 points. Bluffton, the ACAC Duals champion, was second with 224.

Undefeated Patriot senior Mason Winner, who is 33-0, cruised to his championship at 182 pounds with a bye in the quarterfinals and then consecutive first-period pins. Zakk Atkins (120), who earned his 100th career win, fought off Logan Uhlman of Adams Central 5-3 to win his title, freshman Ethan Reiley (113) defeated Bluffton’s Wyatt Corkwell 9-3 and Cooper Jacks (220) topped Bluffton’s Cameron Farmer 8-3.

Adding runner-up finishes for JCHS were Jayden Maymi (106) and Ramon Bravo (195). Zac Brotherton (126) and Camron Gage (138) both finished in third place.



Tribe girls win



LIMA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls swim team won nine events Saturday to dominate the field and finish as champions at the Lima Senior Invitational.

The boys team finished third in a five-team field.

Ava Bubp powered the Indian girls with wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke. She also teamed with her sister Audra Bubp, Autumn Burk and Paige Fortkamp to win the 200 medley relay.

Other individual victories came from Shelby Stammen (200 freestyle), Kyra Clark (500 freestyle), Fortkamp (100 freestyle), Burk (100 butterfly) and Audra Bubp (100 breaststroke). Melissa Laux, Fortkamp, Stammen and Audra Bubp were first in the 200 freestyle relay.

The lone win from the boys team came from Aidan Sheridan, Isaac LeFevre, Michael Braun and Josh Gonzalez in the 400 freestyle relay.



FR tops Cavaliers



Fort Recovery’s boys and girls basketball teams knocked off the Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Indian girls picked up their 12th victory Thursday by a 42-34 score. The boys team improved to 11-3 as it cruised to a 46-27 win Friday.

Kierra Wendel’s 14 points set the pace for the FRHS girls team (12-3, 5-1 Midwest Athletic Conference). Alli Vaughn joined her in double figures with 11 points.

Fort Recovery’s boys (11-3, 3-3 MAC) got 14 points from Brian Bihn. Grant Knapke followed with a dozen points, and Clay Schmitz added 11 points.

 

Chiefs win title



East Jay Middle School’s girls basketball team won as host of Saturday’s East Jay Invitational, defeating Selma 36-25 and Yorktown 38-23. The seventh grade team also topped Selma, 25-11, but dropped the title game 25-21 to Yorktown.

Sophie Saxman scored 15 points in each game for the Chief eighth graders. Bralee VanSkyock tallied 10 points against Selma and seven against Yorktown. Molly Muhlenkamp and Breanna Dirksen added six points apiece in the championship game.

Natalie Carreno totaled 18 points on the day for the EJMS seventh grade team. Daisy Muhlenkamp finished with 13, and Layliana DlDeeb totaled eight.

WJ 7th is runner-up

MONROE — The West Jay seventh grade boys basketball team advanced to Saturday’s championship game at the Adams Central Tournament before falling 45-37 to the host Jets.

The eighth graders lost in the opening round to Blackford, 52-43.

Ben Crouch led West Jay’s seventh graders with 19 points in the championship game. Keegan Wasson followed with eight.

Crouch and Vasin Ridgway tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively, as WJMS blasted Blackford 57-12 to advance to the title game. Eli Goodspeed added eight points.

Liam Garringer’s 18 points paced the eighth grader Eagles in their loss to Blackford. Parker Nichols followed with 13 points.
