Shirley Franck

Obituary

Shirley Ann Franck, 73, of Redkey, Indiana, lost her fierce and lengthy battle with cancer Monday, July 13, 2020, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Born Nov. 10, 1946, in St. Henry, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Ferdinand and Esther Olding Franck. She graduated from Madison High School in 1964, attending Indiana University for her undergraduate degree in education. She received her master’s degree from Ball State University.

Shirley was first and foremost a brilliant teacher, beginning her career at Madison School in Jay County, then teaching grades four, five and six at East Elementary School in Portland. She became acquainted with the Indiana C.L.A.S.S. program, initially sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education, and soon became a full-time teacher and coach working with teachers in multiple schools across the state. She was well-known in educational circles, and had presented at workshops and conferences on the local, state, national and international levels.

In her later years, Shirley was an adjunct professor at IUPUI, teaching science courses for elementary education majors. Her classes became very popular because of her expertise and teaching methods.

In addition to her fervent love for education, she was a wildly devoted Indiana Hoosiers sports fan, as well as a loyal follower of the Indiana Fever women’s basketball team, where she had season tickets for many years. If the Fever were playing, Shirley was likely yelling from the stands.

Shirley was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Muncie, Dunkirk Elks Lodge, ISTA and Jay Classroom Teachers Association, and had volunteered at IU Health Jay for the past year.

Her enthusiasm for life was evidenced by her participation in many softball teams in her younger years, and her zeal for a good card game, especially Texas Hold ‘em, at nearly any moment in her life.

Shirley is survived by her wife, Liz Lawson; a brother, Dennis Franck (wife: Joan) of Salamonia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Bob Franck.

Friends are invited to call Sunday, July 19, 2020, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Jay County Event Center in Portland, Indiana. A celebration of life service will follow at 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Shirley Franck Perseverance Scholarship Fund in care of the Portland Foundation.
