Donald E. “Gene” Grogg, 76, of Berne, Indiana, passed away at 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Indiana.
Gene had previously resided at Swiss Village since 2016. He was born on Sunday, Aug. 8, 1943, in Adams County, Indiana. He married Janice I. Kline on Friday, July 14, 1967, in Union Church, Huntington County.
Gene was a 1961 graduate of Hartford Township High School. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1965 from Huntington College and his master’s from Ball State University.
Gene taught high school math, health, physical education and drivers education. He began his career in teaching and coaching at Madison Township School in Jay County (two years), continued at Southern Wells (one year) and Pennville High (six years), and finished out his teaching career at South Adams, retiring in 2008. Gene coached girls and boys basketball, baseball, cross county, track and tennis.
While devoting his life to teaching and coaching, Gene also enjoyed raising animals and farming. His farm, “Triple J,” included sheep, hogs, turkey and miniature ponies. His passion in life was his family and he attended their many events and supported them in their endeavors. Gene was a member of the Adams County Teachers Association, Coaches Association and West Missionary Church in rural Berne.
He served as a Sunday School superintendent, teacher and church board member for many years. He also was a member of the Adams County 4-H board and helped yearly with the Swiss Days race. Gene volunteered his time regularly at Swiss Heritage Village. He enjoyed all sports, especially Purdue University basketball, playing many games and cards with family and friends, and fishing.

(Roger) Teeter, rural Geneva, Indiana; grandchildren Nicholas Teeter, Kokomo, Indiana, Adrianna Teeter Armbruster, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Marcus Teeter, rural Geneva, Indiana, Alexander Grogg, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Isabella Grogg, Battle Creek, Michigan, and Sophia Grogg, Battle Creek, Michigan; brother Fred (Henrietta) Grogg, Homer, Micigan; brother Howard (Kathy) Grogg, Louisville, Kentucky; sister Letha (Don) Lederman, Noblesville, Indiana; sister Alice Clark, Tekonsha, Michigan; brother Larry (Julia) Grogg, Decatur, Indiana; brother Paul (Carol) Grogg, Bryant, Indiana, sister Marilyn (Ronnie) Warden, Indianapolis; brother Joe (Diana) Grogg, Huntington, Indiana; brother Ron (Sherry) Grogg, Marion, Indiana; sister Joy (Bob) Bogart, Leavenworth, Kansas; and sister Connie (Cliff) Spencer, Ingalls, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his father Alfred E. Grogg; mother R. June (Glentzer) Grogg; daughter Ilene J. Grogg; daughter Elaine D. Grogg; and brother-in-law Keith Clark.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2020, at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, 100 N. Washington St., Geneva, and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at West Missionary Church, 4295 W. Indiana 218, Berne. From 2:30 to 3 p.m., the family will be requesting private time.
A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be at West Missionary Church, 4295 W. Indiana 218, Berne, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020, with Pastor Keith Rupp officiating. Interment will follow in the M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne.
