MISHAWAKA — The Rockets had their a lead vanish in the sixth inning of game one.
A four-run cushion in the opening frame of the second game was more than enough to salvage a split.
The Portland Rockets split a doubleheader with the South Bend Royals on Saturday at Bethel University and had their attempt at another twin bill Sunday against the Mishawaka Brewers on Sunday rained out.
Portland, which dips to 9-7, gave up two runs in the sixth inning and lost the first game 4-3, then scored nine runs in the first three frames of game two en route to a 9-1 victory to salvage the split.
The offense started quickly for Portland in game two, with Justin Greene leading off with a single, Zach Tanner drawing a walk and Patrick Mills getting the first of his three hits.
Chase Ruiz, Corbin Maddox, Mitch Waters and Kasey Henderson got the carousel going as each of them knocked in runs to stake the Rockets a 4-0 advantage.
Four consecutive walks to begin the second inning made it 5-0, then Waters and Henderson both knocked in runs as the Rockets then went up 7-0.
Zach Tanner hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the third inning. Tanner’s blast made it 9-1 after the Royals scored their only run of the game in the home half of the second.
Mills finished with a double and two singles, while Greene and Henderson both had a pair of singles. Caleb Mealy also recorded a hit in the win.
In the opening game, the Rockets jumped out front with one run in the second inning, and tripled the advantage on a two-run single by Maddox. Portland, which hosts the Fort Wayne Jackers at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the final home game of the regular season, managed just two hits the rest of the way.
The Royals, meanwhile, cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth before taking a 4-3 lead with two more runs in the sixth.
Portland starter Chandler Jacks shouldered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with three walks in six innings of work.
Maddox also had a single for a multi-hit game. Greene, Tanner, Waters and Henderson also registered hits in the loss.
