Donald Shively

Obituary

Donald Owen “Doc” Shively, 84, of Celina, Ohio, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio.

Born Aug. 9, 1935, in Celina, he was a son of Otis C. and Aileen R. (West) Shively.

Donald married Joyce Schott on Dec. 14, 1957, and she survives, along with three daughters, Diane (Edward) Neargarder of St. Marys, Ohio, Dawn (William) Jaggers of Syracuse, Indiana, and Della Shively of Celina; seven grandchildren, April, Heath, John, Melanie, Adam, Tyler and Sydney; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale Shively, Portland; and a son-in-law, Sheldon Maxwell, Portland.

Preceding him in death was a daughter, Debra A. “Debbie” Maxwell, who died June 6, 2003; and four sisters, Ruth Jenkins, Mary Weisman, Wanda Byrum and Vivian Joan Shively.

Doc attended Celina High School and was a “jack of all trades.” Over the years, he held many jobs, often two or three at a time. He had been employed by the late Dr. LeRoy Weber, worked as a diesel mechanic at Celina Truck and Tractor and repaired trucks for Borden’s Ice Cream. He was co-owner, along with Woody Wilson, of Triangle Services Trucking Company. Doc and his wife Joyce were the owners of DJ Repair, where he enjoyed working on foreign cars and repairing lawn mowers. Doc also had painted trucks for UPS, and finally retired from Tranco in New Bremen, Ohio.

A favorite pastime that he loved was playing with antique tractors. Doc enjoyed displaying his antique tractors, sawmill and “hit-and-miss” engine at various shows and festivals in the area.  A member of the Celina Men’s Garden Club, he liked gardening and had his own greenhouse. Fishing and spending time with his grandchildren were other activities that Doc enjoyed.

He attended Beaver Chapel Congregational Christian Church near Celina. A loving, giving man, Doc was always helpful to friends and neighbors.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 27, at W.H. Dick and Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.

Private funeral services will be held for the family, with the Rev. Tom Christen officiating. Burial will take place at Swamp College Cemetery, near Celina.

Those attending calling hours and services are required to wear masks as now mandated by the State of Ohio. We ask that you also practice social distancing as much as possible.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Beaver Chapel Church.

Condolences may be expressed to the Shively family at dickandsonshellwarthfh.com.
