“I love it.”

“I feel beautiful.”

Customers at The Loft on Meridian Salon Studio were thrilled with their haircuts one weekday afternoon last week. Afterward, they had the option of shopping for boutique tops, footwear and accessories in the newly renovated building, which boasts a store and a salon.

That was the vision Jennay Jackson had when she decided to open her new business in downtown Portland. The salon, which was under renovation during Indiana’s stay-at-home order, is open again with two hair-cutting stations, a clothing shop and, soon, a full nail salon, all under one roof.

“This has kind of always been a dream of mine,” said Jackson, who has been a hairdresser for eight years and has been selling clothes out of her home since 2018.

Jackson said she always wanted to work in downtown Portland, so when the opportunity came, she seized it in December and bought the former site of Koffee Kup diner at 301 N. Meridian St., Portland.

After she bought the property, she was able to cut hair out of the back room while the main part of the building, which used to be a dining area and kitchen, was converted into a salon.

When the stay-at-home order went into effect and her business was temporarily closed, she focused solely on renovating the building’s interior, which was completed sooner than expected.

“(The stay-at-home order) was kind of a blessing for us,” Jackson said.

State restrictions began being lifted in May. Since then Jackson said the salon has been “slammed” with business, in part because of how many went without a haircut or a new hair-do when salons were closed.

Recently, Jackson said she has seen an uptick in business because customers are worried salons could be closed again because of the rising rate of COVID-19 cases in Indiana and Ohio.

Beyond the salon, Jackson has a rotating selection of imported clothes to shop from, including denim shorts, jewelry and accessories.

She also has a boutique selection of shirts and tops, with no more than six of the same selection available.

Pictures of the shop’s collection are posted regularly on The Loft’s Facebook page, facebook.com/juneandcoboutique, and a full catalogue of clothing is available to order at juneandcoboutique.com.

Her next project is opening a full nail salon, which will be staffed by a nail specialist, she said. She then wants to focus on the exterior of the building in the final phase of the its renovation.

All supplies and upgrades The Loft needed during its renovation was bought locally except dry wall. Jackson also looked to salvage anything she could from the former restaurant and ended up using its booths to round out a wooden section of the ceiling that leads to the front desk, the top of the counter and seats by the store’s windows.

The salon is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday by appointment.
