George G. Meehan, age 86, of Portland passed away Tuesday evening, June 2, 2020, at his son's residence.
He was born in Portland on Dec. 2, 1933, the son of Lawrence and Isabelle (Lamburn) Meehan. He was married on April 20, 1957, to Deloris Butcher and she passed away on June 21, 2004.
He was a 1951 Portland High School graduate and served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of American Legion Post #211, V.F.W. in Fort Recovery, Portland Eagles Lodge, Portland Moose Lodge, Bryant Senior Citizens and lifetime member of Indiana Sheriff’s Association.
He had worked at Union City Body Co., Sheller-Globe and Jay County Courthouse. He served on the Portland Police Department and Jay County Sheriff’s Department, serving as Jay County Sheriff from 1982 to 1990. He was a Jay County councilman and served on the city and county police reserves.
Surviving are one son, John Meehan (wife: Janie) of Portland; one sister, Martha Miller of Bryant; four granddaughters, Amanda, Carrie, Olivia and Marcy; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosalind McAfee.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 4, 2020, at 2 p.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Hines presiding. Burial will be in Lawndale Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
