Camp Encourage will be in a virtual format
Taking note
State of the Heart Care is preparing for its 20th annual grief camp, but this year Camp Encourage will be virtual because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Camp Encourage at Home will be July 10-12 and accepts children ages 6-15 who have experienced the death of a loved one.

Reopening
Minnetrista in Muncie is working on plans for increased public offerings as the reopening process begins during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Minnetrista Leadership has been careful during this time not to lose the heart of the organization. We have looked to our mission and values as a compass during this storm, pointing us in the right direction at the crossroads of every decision. Times of crisis like these can test an organization’s commitment to its values. We are confident that we have remained true,” a spokesman said.
Since May 2, an adapted version of the Farmers’ Market has been operating on Saturdays in compliance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Delaware County Health Department.
On June 14, Oakhurst Gardens will reopen to the public with a one-way self-guided walk.
Between June 14 and Oct 2, Minnetrista will focus on outdoor experiences and offerings for the public. Health experts have noted that there is less risk with outdoor activities, when the public continues to follow CDC guidelines.
More cancellations
The coronavirus pandemic has led the Jay County Historical Society to announce a raft of cancellations:
•All monthly program meetings are canceled until the end of 2020.
•The annual Heritage Festival, a popular spot on the calendar in September, has been canceled.
•An open house at the historical museum set for June 20 has been canceled. That event was to be held in conjunction with the Portland High School Alumni Banquet, which has also been canceled.
The museum remains closed to visitors until Tuesday, June 26.
It will then be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The genealogy library is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment only.
Music help
Arts Place will be offering a “jump start” program to help in-coming sixth graders make the transition to middle school band.
Since middle school band has been canceled for the summer, students would not be able to start with their instrument lessons until the start of school in the fall.
Thanks to Arts Place donors, incoming sixth graders will be able to take private lessons for six weeks for just $10.
The $10 covers one private lesson per week for six weeks.
Parents will be responsible for providing an instrument and book for the student.
Arts Place will make all registration, scheduling and teaching arrangements. Instruments are available for rent through Muncie Music (munciemusic.com).
Online rental is available and Muncie Music will deliver instruments to Arts Place. Registration forms for the JumpStart program will be available soon.
Distributing
LifeStream Services and Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana have expanded their Senior Safety Net food distributions to offer new locations.
In Jay County, the food distribution is on the first Tuesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or until supplies are depleted, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland.
The Senior Safety Net food distribution is in need of active volunteers to help manage the distribution of items on distribution days.
Those interested in volunteering should contact Laura Bray, Volunteer Services Administrator, at (765) 759-3372 or email [email protected].
