Donnie Foster, an inspirational speaker and author of “Face Down,” will be featured at a “Take Back Our Community” event at The Rock in conjunction with the Portland Police Department on May 2.
Foster, a former drug dealer and enforcer who served time in San Quentin, Folsom, Corcoran and Pelican Bay prisons in California, will speak at 6 p.m.
From 4 to 6 p.m., the Portland Police Department will be serving free chili and hot dogs in the church’s parking lot at 1605 N. Meridian St., Portland.
There will be a bounce house, live music, informational booths and the Jay County Sheriff’s Office’s train ride for kids.

Nominations sought
Nominations for the 23rd annual Jack Cole Award for Volunteerism are being accepted by The Portland Foundation.
The award was established by the foundation’s board of trustees to honor Cole’s work as the foundation’s first executive director.
Nominations should be by letter of recommendation and include the nominee’s name, address and a brief background describing why the nominee is deserving of this award.
The winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a nominal cash award to be presented to the volunteer’s charity of choice. The award will be presented at the foundation’s annual meeting on May 20.
Deadline for nominations is Thursday, March 19, 2020.
They should be sent to the foundation office at 107 S. Meridian St., Portland.

Butterfly gardening
Butterfly lovers and gardeners are invited to Limberlost State Historic Site to learn from an expert what to plant in gardens to attract caterpillars and butterflies.
Jody Heaston, Indiana State Parks Volunteer and Indiana Master Naturalist Coordinator for Indiana State Parks, will give a presentation on how to attract caterpillars and butterflies to your yard using native plants.
The event is set for 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, at the Limberlost Visitors Center in Geneva.
The prices is $3 for adult members of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, $2 for youth members, $4 for adult non-members and $3 for youth non-members.

The Harmony Players, a theatre troupe based in Jay County, will present “Charley’s Aunt” in collaboration with Arts Place on March 19 through 21.
Set in 1890s England, the comedy is family friendly.
Performances in Hall-Moser Theatre will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 19 through 21 and at 2 p.m. on March 22.
