CVS Health and Walgreens have announced plans for hiring additional workers and providing bonuses to employees required to work on-site during the COVID-19 pandemic.
CVS Health plans to hire 50,000, and Walgreens 9,500. CVS is giving workers bonuses of up to $500. Eligible recipients include pharmacists, store employees and managers. Walgreens said it would give bonuses – $300 for full-time and $150 for part-time hourly employees in stores and distribution centers – beginning in late April.
"Our colleagues have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to providing essential goods and services at a time when they're needed most," CVS CEO Larry Merlo said in a prepared statement. "As they continue to be there for the individuals and families we serve, we're taking extra steps to provide some peace of mind and help them navigate these uncertain times."
"Our store team members are working incredibly hard, in a very challenging and uncertain time and we’re grateful for all they do each day," Walgreens President Richard Ashworth said in a prepared statement. "We play a critical role in responding to the pandemic and our team members, who are the face of Walgreens, are doing everything they can to support customers, patients and communities across America, who are relying on us at this critical time.”
Not buying
POET has suspended the buying of corn at seven of its 27 ethanol plants, World-Grain.com reported this week.
The website noted biofuel demand has weakened due to the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders.
Three plants in Minnesota and two each in South Dakota and Iowa are involved.
POET is the parent of POET Biorefining-Portland.
“POET has not idled any biorefineries; however, we have temporarily ceased corn purchases at a number of locations and are actively evaluating biofuel production levels to reflect falling gasoline demand,” a spokeswoman for POET told Reuters.
According to World-Grain.com, POET purchases 5% of the nation’s corn and produces 2 billion gallons of ethanol when running at full capacity.

The company has created a Community Response Fund that will distribute grants and food donations to non-profit organizations working to help people in Tyson Foods’ plant communities across the U.S. Community grants will be awarded by invitation only.

Ardagh Group, Glass – North America, parent of glass container plants in Dunkirk and Winchester, this week announced it has partnered with O’Connor Brewing Company to manufacture all of the brewery’s 12oz long-neck glass bottles.
O’Connor is based in coastal Virginia.

Donation
The American Electric Power Foundation, on behalf of Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), will donate $240,000 in emergency funds to help communities in Indiana and Michigan amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is important to all our team members at I&M to support and enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve, and without hesitation we want to step up at this uncertain time and help,” Toby Thomas, I&M president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement. “The AEP Foundation has made it possible for the people at I&M to once again be there for our neighbors.
