A week after an officer-involved shooting in Portland, the name of the man killed in the incident has been officially released.

Jay County Prosecutor’s Office this morning confirmed that Spencer Calvert, 21, Muncie, died following a “police action shooting with an armed individual” May 1.

The name of the deceased had been posted by family and friends on social media, but his identity had not previously been confirmed by officials.

Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur said earlier this week that it is his understanding that the officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. That action is standard for any officer-involved shooting as laid out in guidelines from the U.S. Department of Justice.

According to a press release that was distributed the evening of the incident, officers from Portland Police Department and Jay County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the shooting. The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Alexander and Walnut streets on the west side Portland.

Calvert was transported to IU Health Jay with critical injuries, the press release said.

Indiana State Police is conducting the investigation into the incident but has indicated that all information will be released through Jay County Prosecutor’s Office. Schemenaur said this morning that he does not have a timeline for releasing a report or other details about the shooting.

Calvert was a 2017 Jay County High School graduate who played basketball and golf for the Patriots.
