Doris Duke, age 89, of Portland passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, in the Harrison Terrace Nursing Home in Indianapolis of COVID-19.
She was born April 8, 1931, in Portland the daughter of William and Edna (Derrickson) Gierhart. She was married on April 16, 1949, to Cledus Duke and he died on Feb. 29, 2000. She was retired from Standard Brush and Broom in Portland, attended Sugar Grove Nazarene Church, was a member of Busy Bees Home Extension and enjoyed bowling and quilting.
Surviving are three sons, Larry Duke of Portland, Jeff Duke of Portland and Chris Duke (companion: Stephen Graf) of Indianapolis; three daughters, Linda Shaner (husband: Ron) of Rossburg, Ohio, Tina Paxson (husband: Max) of Bryant and Jill Hardin (husband: Robert) of Albany; one brother Richard Gierhart (wife: Carolyn) of Portland; one sister, Mona Fairfield of Portland; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Danny.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 1, 2020, at 2 p.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Pennville. Visitation will be Monday from noon to 2 p.m. Memorials can be made to the choice of the donor.
