Steven Garinger
Obituary
Steven L. Garinger, known lovingly as Steve by his friends and family, of Portland, Indiana, was called home by the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020, at 10:30 p.m. in Marion, Indiana. He was 74 years young at the time of his passing.
Steve was born on April 13, 1946, in Marion, Indiana, to Brandt and Anna (Kessinger) Garinger. He had one brother, Robert, and a sister, Barbara. They all preceded him in death.
On June 24, 1966, he married Rebecca J. Morgan (Becky). During their marriage, Steve and Becky suffered the loss of two infant daughters, Angela in 1967 and Brandie in 1982. Becky preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1991, after 25 years of marriage.
On July 24, 1993, Steve married Marylyn Sue Cox. Steve and Sue built a life together and were a wonderful example of love to their adult children. Sue proceeded him in death on Sept. 2, 2018, after 25 years of marriage.
Steve served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a truck driver, both long- and short-haul, until his retirement in 2011.
Steve loved sports and especially enjoyed watching NASCAR, the Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Cardinals. Steve enjoyed working outdoors and was very proud of his plants and flowers which could be seen blooming beautifully around his property. If he was not out in the yard working, you could find Steve tinkering in his garage or maintaining his many bird feeders. Steve also enjoyed relaxing inside and having his cat curled up in his lap while watching Fox News.
Steve loved his family unconditionally and was incredibly proud of every single member. He is survived by three daughters, Shelly (Steve) Althouse, Chandra (Ron Rosamond) Garinger and Natasha (Nick George) Garinger; a step-son, Douglas (Missy) Cox; nine grandchildren, Jenna (Billy) VanDiver, Jordan (Brittany Williams) Tucker, Jake (Hannah) Althouse, Mason Althouse, Heidi Cox, Alexandria Kopp, Hilary Cox, Zachary Garinger and Dougie Cox; five great-grandchildren, Levi Tucker, Luke Tucker, Maeve Althouse, Kingston VanDiver and Henry Althouse; and also his beloved cat Angel. Other surviving family members were omitted by their own request.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be placed with both Becky and Sue. There will be a private graveside services for the family.
Memorials can be made in his honor to Riley Children’s Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House Charities, both of which Steve held very close to his heart.
Condolences may be expressed at neptunesociety.com.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Neptune Society.
