To the editor:

After reading a very good editorial about the Jay County Community Awards on Oct. 31 in The CR I thought that a little more horn tooting was in order.

As you all know, I am the first in line to give my departed wife, Vicki, all the accolades I can. Now, I know for a fact that she would be the first to say that every nominee is a winner. She was so very proud and honored each and every year to pass out the awards and also congratulate the other nominees.

She was very delighted when she was able to draw all towns in Jay County into one big chamber. She had a friend from Dunkirk who thought that she would not be able to do this. When it succeeded, this person was one of the first to congratulate her for achieving what they thought was impossible.

She never stopped promoting the chamber, and all businesses in Jay County. If you could not find her in her office it was probably because she was out rounding up, persuading or otherwise trying to get them as a chamber member, if they were not already.

About all the programs, awards and activities  performed by the chamber were started or thought up by Vicki and her many committees. She was a firm believer that when you appoint people to a committee, you may offer help at times, but never try to micro-manage the situation or the committee.

When she first started at the chamber, she took it from a group of do very little for chamber members to one of the best, in my opinion, chambers in the state of Indiana.

When it became time for an award program or other activity to happen, I knew I would not see much of her the whole day until bedtime. That’s just the way she operated and felt about leading the chamber.

I feel that Vicki would be very pleased with Tabby Sprunger, who has taken over the position of executive director. Vicki’s main goal was always to make the chamber thrive, prosper and benefit all chamber members and the community.

Well Vicki, I hope I have tooted your horn long enough, even though you would rather I did not. It was never about her but always the community.
