Jay School Corporation business manager Tarinna Morris died Monday evening at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
She was 57.
Jay School Board had taken action at its meeting Monday to account for Morris, who fell ill last week, to be on an extended leave of absence. It was during the meeting that superintendent Jeremy Gulley received word that Morris had died.
He released a statement later Monday evening after consulting with Morris’ family.
“It is with great sadness that I must inform you that we have lost a member of our school family,” Gulley said.
“Our central office team is currently working to ensure Tarinna’s family is supported during this difficult time,” he added. “We ask for your prayers in support of Tarinna’s family and to those staff who worked closely with Tarinna and are affected by this loss.”
In a Facebook post Monday evening, family members relayed a message from Morris’ daughter, Meghan Morris Deckman. It indicated the Morris had not been feeling well last week and was eventually hospitalized. She suffered a stroke and underwent brain surgery Sunday in an effort to alleviate pressure.
“Unfortunately, the efforts have not been enough and we have had to let her go,” the post said.
Morris, an Eaton resident, had served as business manager for Jay Schools since February 2019. She took over for Michael Bush, who had been filling in on an interim basis following the departure of longtime business manager Brad DeRome a few months earlier.
Prior to joining Jay School Corporation, she had worked for three years as business director for Madison-Grant United School Corporation. She had previously worked as treasurer for Delaware Community School Corporation.
Jay School Board on Monday named Shannon Current as interim business manager, giving both she and Gulley authority to execute documents pertaining to the role. The board also approved a contract with Taycarann for Bush to provide services to help the school corporation manage its business affairs.
