Couple arrested after chase
Felony arrests
A Portland man reportedly led city and county officers on a chase through downtown Portland while he had an infant child in the back seat of his car at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Matthew Campofiore-Audet, 28, 101 S. Pierce St., was eventually immobilized with a stun gun and arrested at his apartment. The child was found unharmed in the back seat of the vehicle and was transported to IU Health Jay as a precautionary measure, according to a Portland Police Department press release.
The chase reportedly began at Richards Restaurant after a Portland police officer saw Campofiore-Audet trespassing at the restaurant. He then ran around the restaurant and was able to get into his car and drove at a “high rate of speed” going south on Meridian Street (U.S. 27), according to the press release.
He eventually struck a Jay County Sheriff’s Office vehicle on Water Street before driving back to his apartment, where he left the child in the backseat of the car and fled to his apartment, according to the press release.
Kimberly M. Audet, 26, same address, allegedly tried to block officers from entering the apartment by pushing them away. Police eventually used a Taser on both of them, leading to their arrests.
Campofiore-Audet is being held without bond in Jay County Jail and was preliminarily charged with battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony, and child endangerment and resisting law enforcement, both Level 6 felonies.
