FORT RECOVERY — A rural Portland teen was killed late Friday night as a result of an off-road vehicle accident.
Jake D. Muhlenkamp, 15, of 4516 N. 700 East, rural Portland, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on State Line Road north of Fox Road in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio.
Muhlenkamp was operating a 2020 Polaris 570 four-wheeler headed north on State Line Road. According to a press release issued Saturday afternoon by Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, the off-road vehicle went off the east side of the road and struck a utility pole.
Muhlenkamp was thrown from the vehicle.
Mercer County Sheriff received a call at 11:55 p.m. regarding the accident.
Muhlenkamp, the son of Troy and Krista Muhlenkamp of rural Portland, was a freshman at Jay County High?School. Krista Muhlenkamp serves as a member of Jay School Board.
“Our school and community will surround all affected by this heartbreaking news with love and support,” Jay School Corporation superintendent Jeremy Gulley said in a Facebook post Saturday afternoon.
The school corporation made counselors available to support students beginning Monday.
Funeral services for Muhlenkamp are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bryant.
Fort Recovery Fire Department, St. Henry Emergency Medical Service and Fort Recovery Police Department assisted at the scene.
