Everett Campbell
Oct. 31, 1925-Sept. 11, 2020
Everett Wayne “Scoop” Campbell Jr., 94, of Dunkirk, Indiana, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, while in the company of family members at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Everett was born in Anderson, Indiana, on Oct. 31, 1925, the son of the late Jessie Helen (Bronnenberg) and Everett Wayne Campbell Sr. He was a 1943 graduate of Dunkirk High School, served in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class in World War II, and was later transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps to continue his service.
He was the loving husband of Dorothy L. (Williams) Campbell, who he happily married on Oct. 30, 1945, and sadly lost on Dec. 7, 2009. Everett worked as a mold maker and quality control manager at Kerr Glass in Dunkirk, Indiana, until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, Indiana, The American Legion, Dunkirk Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge.
Everett enjoyed playing golf and basketball, refereeing and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. Among the many outstanding things and achievements that Everett received throughout his life, he is most remembered as a kind-hearted, hard-working and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved everything basketball. He loved it so much so that he was inducted into the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988, received the IHSAA Certificate of Merit for officiating the IHSAA finals in 1962, ’63 and ’64, and the Center Circle Officials Award in 2008 from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Everett is survived by a son, Jeffrey B. Campbell (wife: Alpha) of Leland, North Carolina; three daughters, Kara Sue Reasoner (husband: Dennis) of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, Linda K. Burcham (husband: Sean) of Dunkirk, Indiana, and Tracy J. Taylor (husband: Dale) of Elizabethtown, North Carolina; two sisters, Jo Ann Sheller of Albany, Indiana, and Carolyn Canada (husband: Bill) of Anderson, Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Joan Ford of Redkey, Indiana. Everett is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Because of the ongoing concern for the health and safety of all family and friends, funeral services were held privately at the convenience of the family with the hope that others will continue to celebrate Scoop’s life, his legacy and family through thoughts, prayers and memories for years to come. He was honored for his service to our county by the Dunkirk American Legion and VFW Post when laid to rest at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, Indiana, or The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Indiana.
Arrangements were entrusted to MJS Mortuaries.
