Maxine Garringer, age 94, of rural Portland passed away Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, in Albany Healthcare.
She was born in Marion, Ohio, on Nov. 1, 1925, the daughter of Bernard and Minnie Mae (Abbott) Coats. She was married on Sept. 24, 1946, to Morton Garringer and he passed away on Dec. 11, 2011.
Maxine had worked for Jay Schools at Bloomfield Elementary and earlier at Jay Garment. She was a member of Collett Nazarene Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a youth leader. She was a graduate of Gov. I.P. Gray High School.
Surviving are five sons, Wade Garringer (wife: Pam) of Mooreland, Indiana, Rodney Garringer (wife: Nona) of Selma, Michael Garringer (wife: Cathy) of Portland, John Garringer (wife: Julie) of Ridgeville and Donald Garringer (wife: Kellie) of Muncie; brother-in-law Gene Dynes; sisters-in-law Idola Coats and Carol Garringer; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, at 11 a.m. in the Collett Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Billy Stanton presiding. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home and Friday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
