FORT RECOVERY — The Indians did their part in taking down the top-ranked team in the state.
They needed a little bit of help in Maria Stein, but the hottest team in the league continued its tear.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team handed the defending Division IV state champion and top-ranked New Bremen Cardinals their second sweep in three days, winning 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 to finish second in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Indians (18-3, 8-1 MAC), who are sixth in the state, needed the No. 5 Marion Local Flyers to top the No. 2 New Knoxville Rangers — they swept New Bremen on Tuesday — to earn a share of the MAC title, the program’s first since 1989. Instead, the Rangers (19-0, 9-0 MAC) beat the Flyers in four sets to claim their first championship since 2005.
Paige Fortkamp led the Indians with 12 kills, and Marissa Gaerke was second with eight kills. Whitley Rammel ended with seven kills.
Kierra Wendel and Gaerke had nine and eight digs, respectively. Rammel also contributed six blocks, while Tiegen Fortkamp and Lilie Leuthold both had three blocks.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-15, 28-26.
Mara Pearson led the squad with eight kills, and Grace Klingshirn had three kills. Emma Kahlig contributed 10 digs.
