FORT RECOVERY — Paige Fortkamp and Natalie Miles went toe-to-toe in the first set.
Each registered seven kills in the high-scoring opener, but the Patriots prevailed, 31-29.
They ran out of gas, though, giving way for Fortkamp and the Tribe to beat up on their state-line rivals.
Fortkamp fired 23 kills in helping the Fort Recovery High School volleyball team bounce back from losing a close first set to take the next three in a 29-31, 25-9, 25-16, 25-17 victory against the Jay County Patriots on Tuesday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“We’ve been starting off badly and we’ve been finishing badly,” said FRHS coach Travis Guggenbiller, whose team moves to 2-0 its young season. “The second set we were better … We have to do a better job of starting the game and ending the game.
“Jay County did a fantastic job making us work for every ball, but I was proud of how our girls responded for the last three sets. I thought we did a good job finishing the first set. Even though we lost, we competed.”
Though Miles shouldered the brunt of the work for the Patriots (2-2) in the first set, coach Amy Dillon said her squad has been working on sharing the load offensively.
“That’s one thing we kind of talked about and one thing we’ve really, really been working on this week is spreading the block on the other side and using more of our hitters,” she said. “We have to use more of our hitters so that we’re not wearing down so quickly. I think we struggle if we’ve got to go four or five sets.”
The first set wasn’t so tense early on, as Jay County opened a 5-1 lead and forced Guggenbiller into taking a timeout.
Two Fortkamp kills aided the Indians in making it a 6-5 set, and they later overtook the Patriots 12-11 thanks to a four-point run, which included back-to-back Hope Wendel aces.
The Indians had a 16-14 lead, only to have two offensive mishaps aid the Patriots in jumping out front, 18-16. Fort Recovery later got back on top 21-20, and even served set point, 24-23, but it was unable to put the set away.
Alana Kunkler recorded the first of her five blocks as the final point of the set to — momentarily at least — give Jay County the momentum.
Offensive miscues and trouble receiving serves were just a couple of many issues the Patriots faced in being unable to score consecutive points in the second set as they only recorded two kills. Fortkamp, meanwhile, tallied four, while the Indians racked up five aces.
“Our whole focus is on aggressive serving with high risk, high reward,” said Guggenbiller, whose team had 15 service errors, including six in the first set. “If you’re going to beat a team that is tough you have to serve aggressively. It’s just a chance you take.”
While set three was tied five times early, Fort Recovery never trailed. A 7-1 run, which included a block and a kill from Whitley Rammel, a Marissa Gaerke kill and three Patriot errors offensively, gave the Indians a 16-9 lead.
Rammel finished with 13 kills to complement Fortkamp on offense while also adding six blocks defensively. Gaerke chipped in a dozen kills and four blocks.
Jay County scored three straight, including consecutive Madison Dirksen aces, ahead of another five-point Tribe swing which put the Indians ahead 21-12.
Again in set four, Fort Recovery never trailed.
Kunkler led Jay County with 10 kills, and Miles was second with eight. Dirksen chipped in seven kills apiece.
“We didn’t have the momentum (after the first set)” said Dillon, whose team hosts Class 2A No. 1 Wapahani on Thursday. “We tried different things in our lineup to try to bring some freshness to the court.
“Went back to the first game lineup for that last set and I think we were kind of done by then.”

Fort Recovery rebounded from a second-set loss to defeat Jay County, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19.
Mara Pearson led the Indians (2-0) with 10 kills. Tiegen Fortkamp chipped in seven kills while also adding seven digs, two aces and nine assists. Allysen Fullenkamp contributed four kills and six blocks, while Grace Klingshirn added seven blocks and two kills.
Bella Denton of Jay County totaled nine kills to lead the Patriots (2-2). Madison Brunsick had seven kills and Lauren Brewster collected four kills. Madyson Fraley and Sophia Saxman ended with 17 and 10 digs, respectively, and Saxman collected 20 assists.
