Capsule Reports
Warrant
A warrant is out for a Redkey man after he led officers on a pursuit in southern Jay County and was able to successfully evade the police on foot after abandoning his car in a corn field at around 7:50 p.m. Aug. 23.
The Jay County Prosecutor’s Office said a warrant was officially placed a week later for the arrest of Zachary M. Hill, 22, 8440 W. Indiana 67. The preliminary charge is resisting arrest and as of this morning he has yet to have been arrested.
“Extensive” damage was caused during the chase to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office 2016 Ford Explorer being driven by deputy Derek J. Bogenschutz, 32, Redkey, according to the sheriff’s office.
Bogenschutz’s vehicle made contact with Hill’s 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 multiple times during the chase, including in the corn field where Hill abandoned his vehicle east of county road 600 South and south of county road 700 West.
That corn field is owned by Z Farms LLC, Redkey, according to a sheriff’s office accident report.
Damage to the property and the vehicles was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
Car rolled
An Ohio man complained of neck pain but did not seek further medical treatment after he was involved in an accident on the west side of Indiana 67 in which the vehicle he was driving rolled over several times.
Donald A. Thurber Jr., 30, Greenville, Ohio, was southbound on the highway north of its intersection with county road 300 South at 2:02 p.m. Tuesday when a deer ran in front of the vehicle. While attempting to avoid driving into the deer, Thurber lost control of the vehicle on a loose patch of gravel.
The vehicle went off the west side of Indiana 67 and into a bean field owned by Godfrey Farms Inc.
Thurber was driving a 2010 Chevy HHR registered to Tina S. Struever, Greenville, Ohio.
Damage was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Stop sign collision
A Portland man and a Fort Recovery woman were involved in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of county roads 200 South and 300 East at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Jonathan I. Coy, 28, failed to stop at a stop sign at the north part of the intersection, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Erica M. Sudhoff, 24, who did not have to stop, then drove into the tail end of Coy’s vehicle while westbound on county road 200 South.
The collision caused Coy’s 2008 Chevy Express to travel off the road at the southwest part of the intersection and into a yard. His vehicle eventually collided with a parked 1976 Chevy Corvette registered to Jonathan L. Tarter, Portland.
Sudhoff’s 2018 Kia came to a rest in the same yard.
Damage was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
