MARION — Gavin Myers and Frankie Crump teamed for yet another win.

The Patriots weren’t able to make it four in a row as well.

Myers and Crump got a win at No. 1 doubles on Thursday for the only victory as the Jay County High School’s boys tennis team fell to the Marion Giants, 4-1.

Myers and Crump, who joined forces to go 3-0 on Saturday in the Muncie Central Invitational in Crump’s season debut after missing time because of strep throat, deposited of Marion’s Soren Bruehler and Ryan Spitzer by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.

The No. 2 doubles tandem for Jay County (4-4) of Darius Esparza and Sam Myers lost to Clayton Drook and Ryan Sebastian 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, junior Crosby Heniser fell to Vikram Oddiraju 6-0, 6-2. Simon Dirksen dropped his No. 2 singles match to Jack Fauser 6-0, 6-0, and Abraham Dirksen fell to Alex Spitzer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Jay County’s junior varsity team came out on top, 3-0.

Austin Dirksen and Soichiro Oyama both won singles matches, while Logan McGinnis and Isaac Miller teamed for a doubles victory.



Patriots fall to Raiders

Jay County High School’s volleyball team was overmatched on Thursday in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-9 loss to the top-ranked Wapahani Raiders.

The Class 2A No. 1 Raiders, who were state runner-up a year ago, moved to 6-1 on the season while the Patriots dipped to 2-3.

Natalie Miles, who was recently named to the Under Armour All-America Watch List, led the Patriots with eight kills and 13 digs. 

Alana Kunkler and Kylie Klopfenstein had three kills each. 

Izzy Rodgers was 11-for-11 from the service line with two aces. Pacie Denney tallied 10 assists and Rodgers chipped in seven assists.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 26-24, 20-25, 16-14. Bella Denton, Madison Brunswick, Maggie Dillon and Sophia Saxman all had five kills for the Patriots (3-2).



Girls lose fourth straight

OSSIAN — After starting the year with three straight wins, the slide continues for the Jay County girls soccer team as it suffered its fourth straight loss with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the host Norwell Knights on Thursday.

The Knights (2-4) scored three goals in each half to down the Patriots (3-4).

Tricia Ison made five saves in goal for the Patriots, and Angel Clairday had six saves.



Spikers both win

Jay County Junior High School’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both defeated Winchester Driver on Thursday.

The eighth graders moved to 4-0 with a 25-12, 25-13 victory, while the seventh graders also stayed perfect with their 25-3, 25-11 win.

Kiley Williams paced the eighth graders with two kills and six aces. Meredith Dirksen also had six aces, and Jozey Shimp contributed three aces.

Mya Kunkler led the seventh grade Patriots with two kills. Kayla Jetmore recorded nine aces, and Lani Muhlenkamp had three aces.



Girls win

The JCJHS girls cross country team defeated Bluffton on Thursday, 22-35, at Hudson Family Park.

The boys’ team lost, 24-34.

Alexis Sibray was the individual winner in the girls’ race with her time of 14 minutes, 26 minutes. Peyton Wendel (15:29) was second, while Emily Manor (16:09), Lauren Fisher (16:23) and Emily Young (16:41) were fifth through seventh, respectively.

Aubrey Millspaugh (ninth), Emma Hatzell (14th), Rihanna Hartman (16th), Lucy Raines (17th), Lina Lingo (18th) and Dakota Chowning (19th) also ran for the Patriots.

Results for the boys were not provided.
