LYNN — A victory against a sectional rival came down to one match.

The visitors pulled through.

Frankie Crump and Gavin Myers came up with with a three-set victory at No. 1 doubles in helping the Jay County High School boys tennis team defeat the host Randolph Southern Rebels.

Crump and Myers lost the first set to Hagan Gambrel and Jake Mifsud 6-2 before rebounding to take the second, 6-3. Crump and Myers had to battle in the decisive set but prevailed 6-4 for the victory, which secured the overall team win.

Darius Esparza and Sam Myers won their No. 2 doubles match against Jakson Latello and Garrett Cox 6-4, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, JCHS freshman Abraham Dirksen beat Colton Bledsoe 6-1, 6-3.

Crosby Heniser fell in his No. 1 singles match to Jake Good, 6-3, 6-1 and Simon Dirksen lost to Tyler Fink at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 4-0. Soichiro Oyama and Isaac Miller both got singles wins. Logan McGinnis teamed with Austin Dirksen for a doubles win, while Luke Muhlenkamp and Allen Dues got a doubles win as well.



Spikers stumble

BLUFFTON — The Jay County volleyball team rallied to force a fifth set and nearly escaped with a win but stumbled down the stretch in a 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 15-12 loss to the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.

Jay County (2-4, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) got 15 kills from Madison Dirksen and 13 kills from Alana Kunkler, who also had a team-high 18 service points. Natalie Miles posted 12 kills to go with her team-best 30 digs. Grace Brewster tallied 26 digs, and Pacie Denney collected 23 assists.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 25-13, 25-12. Madison Brunswick led the team with five kills, Natalie Wehrly finished with nine digs and Joske Herndon was a perfect 10-for-10 on serves with three aces while also totaling 14 assists.



Golfers third

MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls golf team finished third Tuesday in a three-team meet with the Yorktown Tigers and Wes-Del Warriors at Muncie Elks Country Club.

Yorktown won with a score of 191. Jay County and Wes-Del both tied with 226, but the Warriors got the edge because the Patriots did not have a fifth golfer score.

Erika Heitkamp led JCHS with 51, and Raquel Wehrly was second with 55. Jacqueline Smith shot 57 for the Patriots’ No. 3 score, while Paityn Chapman ended with 63 to complete the team score.



JV football wins

PONETO — It took six total games, but the Jay County football program got its first win of the season Tuesday as the junior varsity Patriots beat the Southern Wells Raiders, 36-0.

The Patriots (1-2) scored 14 points in the first quarter and led 22-0 at halftime. A 14-point fourth quarter put the game well out of reach for the host Raiders.

Taylor Gould rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns while also running in a 2-point conversion.

Parker Nichols was 8-of-11 through the air for 127 yards and two TDs. Trey Nichols and Owen Ransom each caught TD passes from Parker Nichols.

Jay County’s varsity team is 0-3, giving the program an overall record of 1-5 on the season.



7th wins

BLUFFTON — Jay County’s seventh grade volleyball team moved to 5-0 on the season Tuesday with a 25-12, 25-8 win against the Bluffton Tigers.

The Jay County eighth graders fell 25-21, 25-24, and dip to 4-1 on the year.

Kayla Jetmore led the seventh graders with seven aces and two kills, while Elise Mercer contributed five aces. Paisley Fugiett and Lani Muhlenkamp turned in two aces each.

Cassie Petro and Kiley Williams led the eighth grade squad with four kills each. Daisey Muhlenkamp, Brenna Bailey and Petro collected three digs each, and Morgan DeHoff had four digs, three aces and one kill.
