Cooper Farms providing supplies
Business roundup
Cooper Farms provided backpacks and school supplies to more than 650 students of employees.
The company has had the program in effect for several years but expanded it this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Supplies included face masks and hand sanitizer.
“It’s such an honor to be able to provide these school supplies and backpacks to the kids,” said Kacy Wagner, human resource manager at the cooked meats plant in Van Wert, Ohio. “Back-to-school shopping can be a financial burden for many families every year, and this year is potentially worse for many families who may have lost income, so we’re happy to help in that way.”
Ardagh collaborating
Ardagh Group is partnering with Heaven Hills Brands to manufacture the majority of its premium bottles in the U.S.
Ardagh, which operates glass manufacturing plants in Dunkirk and Winchester, will produce bottles ranging in size from 375 milliliters to 1.75 liters for Heaven Hills’ premium spirits. Brands include Evan Williams Bourbon, Deep Eddy Vodka and Admiral Nelson’s Rum.
“As a leader in glass packaging, Ardagh is proud to work alongside Heaven Hill Brands, America's largest independent family owned and operated producer and marketer of distilled spirits,” said Ardagh North America chief commercial officer John T. Shaddox. “Ardagh continues to focus on innovations in complex spirits bottle shapes, as well as new design techniques and manufacturing capabilities, to support Heaven Hill’s unique, distinguished brands.”
Walmart is flying
Walmart launched a pilot program Wednesday for using drones to deliver its products.
Teaming with Flytrex, Walmart is offering delivery of some grocery and household items via drone in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The drones are controlled remotely.
“We know that it will be some time before we see millions of packages delivered via drone,” said Walmart in a press release. “That still feels like a bit of science fiction, but we’re at a point where we’re learning more and more about the technology that is available and how we can use it to make our customers’ lives easier.”
Using reusable
McDonald’s announced Wednesday that it is partnering with TerraCycle circular packaging service Loop to test a new reusable cup model for hot beverages.
The company plans to test the new cups at restaurants in the United Kingdom in 2021. Customers will be able to choose the cup, for a deposit, then redeem the deposit by returning the cup to a participating restaurant.
“We’re on a journey to rethink how we package products to give customers options that reduce waste, maintain the highest safety standards, and enhance the McDonald’s experience they expect and enjoy,” said McDonald’s vice president of global sustainability Jenny McColloch. “That’s an innovation challenge, and it’s one we think the Loop model has potential to help us solve.”
Selling meats
Arby’s is now selling meats in to-go packages.
The company launched the test program in locations in the Atlanta area, offering roast turkey, smoked ham and corned beef in half-pound and one-pound packages, TODAY Food reported. The change is part of an effort to continue to sell Arby’s products while more consumers make meals at home.
"With COVID-19 and social distance guidelines, many brands/companies have been challenged to think differently in how they provide best-in-class service to their guests," a representative from Arby's told TODAY Food in an email. "Arby’s Meat-by-the-Pound test offering was born out of the desire to provide guests high-quality deli meat through the convenience of a drive-thru.”
Center opens
Dollar Tree, parent company of Family Dollar, celebrated the grand opening of a new distribution center in Rosenberg, Texas, last week.
Plans for the $130-million facility were announced in February 2019. It will serve Dollar Tree stores in a three-state region.
Dollar Tree also recently started shipping from a new facility in Ocala, Florida.
“Our two newest state-of-the-art distribution centers will enhance our supply chain efficiencies by providing stores in the southeastern and southwestern states with essential products, at great values, for our customers,” said chief logistics officer Michael Lech in a press release.
