ST. HENRY, Ohio — The Indians had another match against a ranked conference opponent.

They got another victory, too.

Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team got pushed to the brink but prevailed in the end by beating the St. Henry Redskins 25-19, 25-27, 26-24, 16-25, 15-9 on Thursday.

The win improved the Division IV No. 9 Indians, who upset second-ranked Marion Local on Tuesday, to 11-1 and 3-1 in Midwest Athletic Conference play. St. Henry, which finished 12th in the most recent poll, falls to 8-4 (2-2 MAC).

Whitley Rammel led the Indians with 21 kills and 11 blocks, while Paige Fortkamp tallied 12 kills and 11 digs. Kierra Wendel’s 14 digs were tops on the team. Hope Wendel was perfect with all 28 of her serves while adding five aces and setting up her teammates to the tune of 26 assists.

Fort Recovery and Marion Local are tied for third in the league while top-ranked and defending state champion New Bremen and No. 6 New Knoxville are tied at 4-0 in MAC play.

The Tribe’s junior varsity team also won, 25-22, 25-18. Mara Pearson led the team with four kills, while Emma Kahlig and Teigen Fortkamp had three kills each.



Skid over

GASTON — Jay County’s volleyball team snapped its four-match losing streak with a 15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 victory on Thursday against host Wes-Del.

Madison Dirksen led the Patriots (4-10) with 15 kills, while Abbie Fields, Natalie Miles and Kylie Klopfenstein each had four kills.

Pacie Denney had a team-high 20 aces, 12 service points and four aces.

Grace Brewster and Alana Kunkler each had three digs.

Kunkler finished with seven blocks and Fields contributed three digs.

Jay County’s junior varsity team lost, 25-22, 25-16. Bella Denton totaled four digs, Madison Fraley posted 14 digs, and Sophie Saxman contributed eight service points and eight assists.



Soccer falls

YORKTOWN — The Jay County girls soccer team fell to the Class 2A No. 11 Yorktown Tigers on Thursday, 9-0.

It marked back-to-back losses for the Patriots (5-7-1) against sectional rivals after losing to the Delta Eagles 5-4 on Tuesday. The Tigers, meanwhile, remained unbeaten at 11-0-1.

Yorktown, which beat Jay County 3-0 during their 2019 regular season meeting and ended the Patriots’ 2018 campaign with an 8-4 loss in the sectional semifinal, jumped out to a commanding lead on Thursday with six goals in the first half. The Tigers tacked on three more after intermission.

Lea Alexander scored three times for the Tigers, her fourth hat trick this season. Madi Oliver, Macie Dowd and Chloe Mariotti also scored for Yorktown.



Girls win

MODOC — The Jay County Junior High School girls cross country teams placed first in a four-team meet on Thursday at host Union.

The Patriots scored 23 points to win, with Monroe Central (48) second and Wes-Del (63) third.

Jay County’s boys scored 35 points for second, behind Monroe Central (25) and ahead of Wes-Del (63).

Alexis Sibray won the girls race with her time of 12 minutes, 24 seconds. Ayla Grabner was runner-up, Emily Manor finished fifth, Peyton Wendel finished seventh and Emily Young ended eighth.

Joseph Boggs of Jay County was runner-up in the boys race. Creed Besiwanger placed third, Gabe Pinkerton ended sixth, Jacob Monroe was 11th and Max Klopfenstein finished 13th.



Indians top Tigers

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade football teams both defeated the Versailles Tigers on Thursday at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.

The seventh graders moved to 3-0-1 with a 14-0 victory, while the eighth grade squad improved to 1-3 with an 18-13 win.

Reece Wendel and Alex Gaerke both had touchdowns for the seventh graders, and Colson Post had a 2-point conversion.

Caden Gresez scored twice in leading the Tribe eighth grade team. Briggs Overman added one touchdown for the Indians.
