The Patriots were on their way to their second draw of the season.
A sophomore had another plan.
Mara Bader, a Jay County High School sophomore, scored the only goal of the night Tuesday as the Patriot girls soccer team defeated the Blackford Bruins, 1-0.
Late in the game, Jay County (7-7-1), which had plenty of chances against Blackford goalkeeper Alexa Hurd but were unable to get a shot past her, finally broke the scoreless tie with 10:22 left to play.
With the ball deep in the attacking third, Jay County pulled Hurd to the right side of the net.
Hurd wasn’t able to corral a shot from and it slipped through her legs and along the goal line toward the left post.
Bader chased down the loose ball and tapped it past the goal line for her eighth mark of the season, putting her in a tie with classmate Gabi Bilbrey as the team’s leading scorer.
Jay County goalkeeper Tricia Ison didn’t have much work, but she saved all three Bruin shots on goal. The junior tallied her third shutout of the season and sixth of her career. In two games against the Bruins, she has made four saves and not allowed a goal.
The Patriots will have a chance to go above .500 for the first time since Sept. 1 as they close the regular season at home on Thursday against the Muncie Central Bearcats.
