Dick Hidy
Obituary
Dick Hidy, 67, of Montpelier, Indiana, passed away at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital at 3:58 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard Dale Hidy Jr. was born to Peggy (Zimmerman) and Richard Dale Hidy Sr. in Indianapolis on May 16, 1954. He attended school in Pennville through the eighth grade before moving with his family to Shelbyville where he graduated in 1972. He then traveled to Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas. It was there he met Connie Lauffer, and that changed the course of his life forever. They were married on May 17, 1975, in Protection, Kansas, and recently celebrated 46 years together.
Dick moved to Montpelier to open the Hidy Shell Station and also worked in construction. He discovered his true calling when he was hired into the engineering department at Sheller Globe. Dick became a talented automotive weather strip design engineer who also worked for Jennerjahn Machine and GenCorp in Wabash, eventually becoming its engineering manager. He finished his career as a consultant with several companies in the northern part of the state.
Dick was a member of the Gilead Church. He was a past member of the Montpelier Kiwanis Club and had served as park board president. He excelled at woodworking and cooking, and found very few challenges he couldn’t master. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and taking long drives in the country with Jack, his best dog friend. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his private pilot’s license. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoying the people they have become.
He is survived by his father, Richard Hidy of Shelbyville; wife, Connie, Montpelier; son Charles (Cindy) of Hartford City; daughter Janel (Blake) Greene of El Mirage, Arizona; son Jon (Lexi) of Muncie; and three grandchildren, Aiden Hidy, Ethan Hidy, with another, Raelyn Hidy, due in November. Siblings include Sue (Bill) Dittrich, Indianapolis, Mona (Howard) Beach, Inglis, Florida, and Alan Hidy, Shelbyville.
Dick was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Hidy; and his grandparents, Charles and Dorris Zimmerman, and Cleo and Mary Hidy.
