HAVILAND, Ohio — Each of Riley Hiser’s first seven carries went for six or fewer yards.
The eighth covered 32 yards with the senior reaching the end zone.
It was a site he’d return to often.
Hiser tied the school record with five rushing touchdowns Friday night as he carried the Fort Recovery High School football team to a 39-21 season-opening victory over the host Wayne Trace Raiders.
Hiser’s first seven carries went for 6, 3, zero, 3, 5, 3 and 5 yards before he broke off the big run for the touchdown for a 7-0 lead. All of it — his frequent carries and his TD — foreshadowed what was to come.
Fort Recovery coach Brent Niekamp kept calling Hiser’s number Friday night, with the senior later pulling the Indians even on a 4-yard scoring run in the second quarter and then putting them ahead 20-14 with a 1-yard TD about 5 minutes later.
The Raiders (0-1) would pull to within 26-21 in the third quarter, but Hiser handled all of the scoring in the fourth. He reached the end zone on a 53-yard run 10 seconds into the final period and then sealed the game with his 2-yard TD with 5:26 to play.
In all, Hiser toted the ball 35 times for 284 yards and the record-tying five touchdowns. He matched the mark set by Jason Pottkotter in 2011 and later tied twice by 2018 graduate Will Homan. Hiser’s rushing total was fourth-highest in school history. (Homan owns the record with 405 yards in a single game.)
Junior quarterback Cale Rammel supported Hiser’s record-setting effort with an efficient passing night, going 13-of-19 for 156 yards and a 15-yard scoring pass to Troy Homan. Logan Homan caught four passes for 55 yards while Reece Guggenbiller had three grabs for 67 yards.
The Indians (1-0) racked up 494 yards of total offense, nearly doubling Wayne Trace’s 262. (Kyle Slade led the Raiders with 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six attempts while Jared Pierce added 81 yards and a TD on 20 carries.) Caleb Evers, Logan Homan and Guggenbiller all had seven tackles for the Tribe.
FRHS will play its home opener Friday against Urbana.
