The losing streak is over.

Jay County High School’s girls golf team got its first win of the season Monday by finishing second in a three-team meet at Portland Golf Club.

Bluffton was first with 218, four strokes ahead of the Patriots (1-5). Monroe Central shot 224 for third.

Maddy Snow led Jay County with a career-best 49. Janae Jacobs posted a 55 for the second-best JCHS team score, and Paityn Chapman shot 57. Rosealynne Smith shot 61 to round out the team total.

Cassandra Coffin also competed, but her 68 was not a factor into the overall score.

Lily King of Bluffton shot 47 to earn match medalist honors.

In junior varsity action, Ellie Klarer shot 70.



Trio of tricks

MUNCIE — A trio of players recorded hat tricks in leading the Jay County girls soccer team to a 10-4 victory against the host Burris Owls on Saturday.

It was the first time the Patriots (2-1) — they erupted for seven goals in the second half — have scored 10 goals in a game since Sept. 18, 2018, a 10-0 shutout of the Delta Eagles.

Angel Clairday tallied the first three goals of her career. Mara Bader had the first hat trick of her career as well, and the sixth multi-goal game of her career. Junior Gabi Bilbrey also had three goals, her first hat trick since her freshman season.

Freshman Morgan DeHoff also got in on the scoring for the first goal of her career.


Tricia Ison turned away nine Owl shots.



Jay comes back

WOODBURN — Jay County used a second half surge to get past the host Woodlan Warriors on Monday, 4-1.

The Patriots (2-0, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) trailed 1-0 before a four-goal outburst in the final 40 minutes.

Cristian Marentes paced the offense with a goal and two assists. Gavin Muhlenkamp, Kaleb Meadows and Levi Muhlenkamp all scored as well.

Bryce Collins chipped in with an assist, and Ian Ruiz turned away six shots.



Jay 8th wins opener

HARTFORD CITY — The Jay County eighth grade volleyball team opened its season Monday with a 25-8, 25-8 victory against the host Blackford Bruins.

Paisley Fugiett led the Patriots (1-0) with 17 service points, one kill and two assists. Kayla Jetmore chipped in 12 service points, and Elise Mercer finished with seven points.

Mya Kunkler contributed four kills, and Lani Muhlenkamp tallied two assists.
