Robert E. Blumenhorst, age 86, of Portland passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021, at IU Health Jay in Portland.
He was born in Jay County on March 14, 1935, the son of LeRoy and Bernice (Goodyear) Blumenhorst Sr. He was married to Arlean A. Nibarger on Nov. 18, 2008, and she survives.
He had worked for Indiana Glass for 35 years and Heartland Hatchery for 11 years. He served in the National Guard from 1954 to 1957. He was a member of the Family Worship Center. Robert was an avid bird lover, having raised parakeets, cockatiels and pigeons. He also loved his dogs. He enjoyed flea markets, long drive and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Surviving are his wife Arlene; three daughters, Fay Moles (husband: Dale) of Pennville, Becky Eloy (husband: John) of New Haven and Tabatha Watkins (husband: Marty) of Portland; three stepdaughters, Freda Rohrer (husband: Gary) of Portland, Fay Bird (husband: Butch) of Portland and Barb Steed of Portland; one brother, James Blumenhorst (wife: Carolyn) of Dunkirk; one sister, Mary Nibarger of Pennville; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Eric and Dick; two brothers, Tom and Leroy; and two sisters, Betty and Shirley.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Willis presiding. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory in Muncie. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Memorials can be made to the Jay County Cancer Society.
