Toddler found in pond

BLUFFTON –– Indiana officials are investigating the death of a toddler after she was found in a private pond Sunday night.
Adams County dispatch received a call at 7:38 p.m. Sunday about a missing 18-month-old female from a home in the 200 block of south county road 800 East, according to a press release issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The toddler was last seen playing inside the residence. Her family realized she was missing and called 911.
One of her family members searched a pond on the property and found her. Lifesaving efforts were immediately started, according to the release, but they were unsuccessful. The toddler was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m.
There is an ongoing investigation into the case by Indiana conservation officers.
Car struck
An unknown driver struck the rear of a Hartford man’s car on Indiana 18 and drove away about 5:55 a.m. Saturday.
Thomas J. Allsup, 28, was driving eastbound on the highway just west of U.S. 27 when his 2014 Ford Mustang was hit in the back by an unknown vehicle following too closely, according to a report from Jay County Sheriff’s Office. After hitting Allsup’s Mustang, the unknown vehicle drove around Allsup and continued east on the highway.
Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Lost control
A Ridgeville man lost control of his truck on Indiana 67 about 2:52 a.m. Saturday.
Cameron J. Parsons, 21, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving south on the highway near Indiana 26 when he lost control of his 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. His vehicle continued into a ditch and rolled over onto its right side.
Parsons was given a preliminary breath test, and it indicated he had a blood alcohol level of 0.19%. Results from a blood alcohol test are pending.
Parsons’ vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between 2,500 and $5,000.
Rear collision
An Albany woman crashed the car she was driving into a Redkey woman’s vehicle on Indiana 67 about 1:38 p.m. Saturday.
Mackenzie R. Hawk, 18, Albany, was driving east on the highway. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she didn’t see the 2003 Jeep Liberty, driven by 62-year-old Judy E. Schubert of Redkey, stopped on the highway waiting to turn onto county road 1150 West. Hawk wasn’t able to stop in time and crashed the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu she was driving into the back of Schubert’s Jeep.
Both vehicles were towed, with damage estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. Hawk’s Chevrolet is registered to Randall B. Cheesman of Muncie.
Deer hit
Wild animals caused two accidents recently.
Robert S. Huston, 50, Ridgeville, was driving a 2009 Dodge Charger north on U.S. 27 just south of county road 300 South about 6:30 a.m. today. While driving on the highway, a deer ran into the side of the vehicle Huston was driving, causing between $2,500 and $5,000 in damage to the side door and wheel well. The vehicle Huston was driving is registered to Sherri L. Phenis of Saratoga.
John W. Garringer, 62, Ridgeville, was driving his 2019 Ford F150 east on county road 800 South near county road 400 East about 8:45 a.m. Friday when a deer ran into his path. Garringer wasn’t able to stop before hitting the animal with his vehicle, causing between an estimated $1,000 and $2,500 in damage.
Dense fog
A Hartford City man drove past a stop sign and into a field while struggling to see through fog at the intersection of Indiana 26 and Indiana 67 about 5:47 a.m. Wednesday.
Robert C. Uhrick, 31, was driving his 2000 Plymouth Neon east on Indiana 26 when he came to the curve that continues southeast and intersects with Indiana 67. Uhrick couldn’t see through the early morning fog, according to a report from Jay County Sheriff’s Office, and he drove past the stop sign at the intersection. Uhrick’s Plymouth Neon continued into a ditch and a corn field.
His vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
