Local students will be receiving nearly $145,000 in scholarships.
The Portland Foundation on Monday announced a total of $143,075 in awards for 79 recipients for its summer 2021 scholarship cycle.
The scholarships included five Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badders Medical Scholarships of $3,200 each for Jay County High School graduates majoring in a doctoral medical program. They went to Kellie Fortkamp, Jared Schlosser, Elizabeth Schoenlein, Kathryn Smeltzer and Abbigayle Smith.
Jerry R. Pierce Memorial Scholarships, with a preference given to employees and descendants of employees of W&M Manufacturing, Pier-Mac Plastics and Accelerated Curing, of $3,000 each went to Richard Foster Jr., Hannah Maylin, Chase McFarland, Riley Norris and Taylen Reedy.
Kaitlyn Dow, Julia McClung, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Michael Schlechty, Andrew Simmons, Lillian Trinidad and Cherie Walter were selected for $1,600 Alwyn Carder Scholarships for Jay County residents majoring in architecture, history or education. And Daniel Bracy and Amber McClain were chosen for Linus and Margaret Mescher Scholarships of $1,500.
Clifford and Nancy Ball Scholarships of $1,400 each for JCHS graduates went to Daniel Bracy, Katelyn Lyons and Maxwell Moser. Orla and Ruth Tharp Education Scholarships of $1,400 went to Mackenzie Poole and Miranda Reinhart and of $1,300 went to Collin Haines, Julia McClung, Alayna Myers, Taylen Reedy, Ethan Theurer and Evan VanCise.
Weldon and Dorothy Hamma Memorial Scholarships of $1,400 went to Lindsey Franks, Emily Reier, Carrie Schmit and Angela Stephens and $1,000 went to Kaitlyn Dow, Mitchel Frasher, Daniel Fugiett, Klarisa Hemmelgarn, Joseph Hilty, Vivienne Kunkler, Lucy Laux, Carissa Mercer, Dawn Minnick, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Ethan Myers, Xavier Ninde, Ryan Schlechty, Ivan Smeltzer, Cole Stigleman, Jordan Stultz and Cherie Walter.

Joyce A. Horn Scholarships of $825 for JCHS graduates who are juniors or seniors majoring in elementary education went to Kaitlyn Dow, Julia McClung and Cherie Walter; Richard L. and Loretta E. (Larry) Zeigler Memorial Scholarships of $750 to Jay County residents entering their junior year or higher of college went to Kaitlyn Dow, Julia McClung, Xavier Ninde and Cherie Walter; and the Robert Quadrozzi Memorial Scholarship of $600 for a non-traditional student went to Taylor May.
