The Patriots opened their season with a resounding win Tuesday.

Jay County High School’s wrestling team, which is ranked third in Class 2A, topped Class 1A No. 5 Centerville 52-20 in its first meet of the year.

Freshman A.J. Myers pinned Luke Tinkle as the second period ended in their 170-pound match. It was the first career victory for Myers.

Landon Garringer (106), Cody Rowles (113), Bryce Wenk (182) and Ramon Bravo (195) all picked up first-period pins in their respective matches.

Taye Curtis pinned Conner Frazier 3 minutes, 19 seconds, into their match at 120. Ethan Reiley (126) picked up a 9-1 major decision over Mylan Nocton, and Tony Wood (132) beat Oshea Phillips by an 8-2 decision. Daidrick Retz edged Aiden Hoelscher 6-5 in their 145-pound bout.

Max LeMaster earned a forfeit at 285.

Kaleb Meadows (138), Cameron Gage (152), Nate Paxson (160) and Conner Specht (220) lost their respective matches.



Girls trounce Knights

FOUNTAIN CITY — Renna Schwieterman had her third 20-point game so far this season in leading the Jay County girls basketball team as it trounced the Northeastern Knights 64-33 Tuesday.

Jay County (5-2), which finished 13th in the most recent Class 3A poll, ran out to a 21-13 lead against the Knights and pushed the score to 42-19 at halftime. It was 57-29 at the end of the third.

Schwieterman, a junior, finished with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Patriots, who host Fort Recovery on Saturday afternoon. Madison Dirksen was second with 11 points, and Izzy Rodgers tallied nine points.

Mabrey McIntire swiped 10 balls for steals to go with her five points.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won 16-10 in two quarters. Meredith Dirksen led the scoring with six points, and Cassie Petro added four points.



Boys pick up wins

DECATUR — Jay County Junior High School’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both beat the Bellmont Braves on Tuesday.

The eighth grade squad won 29-21, while the seventh graders grabbed a 41-13 victory.

Carter Link scored 10 points to lead the eighth graders (3-2). Aiden Phillips and Drew Schemenaur finished with six points each.

Jayden Comer scored 11 points for the seventh grade team (3-2). Wyatt Foster, Zabier Hudson, Julian Hudson and Noah Hammond had four points each.



Girls rout Braves

The Jay County seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both had lopsided wins against the Bellmont Braves on Tuesday.

The eighth grade team earned a 44-9 win, while the seventh graders triumphed 27-7.

Raylah Newton scored 12 points to lead the eighth graders, who also got eight points from Alexis Sibray, six points from Reba Ashcraft and five points from Mya Kunkler.

Lizzy Brunswick (10 points) and Natalie May (eight points) led the seventh graders in scoring. Ella Rigby contributed six points.
