The other didn’t even get to wrestle.
Lizzie Dollar and Tricia ison were two of a half dozen Patriots to record wins Thursday as the Jay County High School girls wrestling team defeated Brebeuf Jesuit 36-12 on senior night.
It was the team’s first ever home dual meet.
Dollar pinned Nia Stewart at 113 pounds in a mere 41 seconds, and Ison received a forfeit at 170 pounds.
Mallory Winner was leading Willow Arnold in the first period of their 160-pound match before Arnold forfeited because of injury. Lily Lothridge pinned Elie Lo at 138 pounds in 36 seconds.
Jayla Huelskamp (120) and Molly Hines (182) received forfeits in their respective weight classes.
Emily Manor (126) and Addison Denney (145) got pinned in the first period.
Swimmers split
ANDERSON — Jay County’s swim team split with the Anderson Indians on Thursday.
The JCHS girls won 106-79, and the boys fell 121-54.
Elayna Paro was the only double winner for the JCHS girls, who moved to 2-0. Paro won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly.
Maddy Snow won diving with 174.15 points. Mara Bader was victorious in the 100 backstroke, and Zion Beiswanger got a win in the 100 breaststroke.
Morgan DeHoff, Paro, Bader and Beiswanger combined to win both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Kyle Sanders (200 freestyle) and Josh Monroe (100 breaststroke) won their respective races for the boys.
FR drops opener
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team lost to the New Bremen Cardinals 44-32 on Thursday in the Midwest Athletic Conference opener.
The Indians dip to 0-2 (0-1 MAC) ahead of a Saturday afternoon showdown with state-line rival Jay County (5-2).
Mara Pearson scored 11 points to lead the Tribe. Grace Guggenbiller was second with nine points, and Cali Wendel was third with eight points.
Whitley Rammel and Kennedy Muhlenkamp had two points apiece.
Falls short
CANTON, Ohio — One former state champion fell short of another title. This time as a member of the coaching staff.
Wes Wenning, a 2017 Fort Recovery High School graduate, had his Akron Archbishop Hoban football team come up short with a 21-10 loss to Winton Woods in the Division II state championship on Thursday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Thursday.
Wenning, an assistant coach for the Knights, helped the FRHS football team to the Division VII state title in 2015.
Hoban (12-4), which was chasing its sixth state championship in seven years, grabbed a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter but fell behind 14-3 at halftime. Hoban returned a fumble for a touchdown 10 seconds into the third quarter, but never made up the deficit from there.
Girls sweep Warriors
Jay County Junior High School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both defeated the Woodlan Warriors on Thursday.
Despite not scoring a point in the second quarter, the seventh graders got an 18-16 victory. The eighth graders edge the Warriors 23-22.
Gabi Petro scored four points to lead the seventh graders. Lizzy Brunswick chipped in three points, while Ella Rigby, Bailey Towell, and Amelia Heath had two points each.
Raylah Newton’s six points led the eighth grade team, and Mya Kunkler was second with five points. Cali Yates, Alexis Sibray and Rinah Cross all had four points.
Jay trounces Woodlan
WOODBURN — The Jay County seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams picked up double-digit wins against the Woodlan Warriors on Thursday.
The seventh grade team won 46-34, and the eighth graders earned a 54-32 victory.
Jayden Comer put in a team-best 20 points for the seventh graders (4-2), and Brock Wasson was second with 16 points.
In the eighth grade game, Carter Fugiett and Gradin Swoveland scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.
