Steve Myers
Oct. 16, 1949-Nov. 30, 2021
Steve Myers, 72, Albany, went home to Heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, at his home in Albany.
Steve was born in Portland to Russell and Catherine (Carey) Myers on Oct. 16, 1949. He graduated from Redkey High School and received an honors student bachelor’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1999. (Steve said he crammed his four-year degree into 32 years.) He married the love of his life, Marlena (Perry) Myers, in 2002.
He was co-founder of Pak-A-Sak convenience stores and managed the business for over 25 years. He also developed Golfbrook Estates and other businesses in Portland where he lived for 30 years; he continued business consulting after retirement.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a White House staff member for nearly four years under President Richard Nixon, receiving many awards and citations. He faithfully attended Fellowship Baptist Church for many years.
Steve loved his family and referred to them as his “wonderful legacy.” He is survived by his loving wife, Marlena (Perry) Myers, who he thanked every day for making him so happy; son Brian Myers (Joni); daughters Denise Swingley (Steve), Leslie Peterson (Michael), Jodi Swingley (Stacy), Larissa Robbins (Derek Weaver), Kristina Besser and Briana Smith (Aaron); 22 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren; sisters Beverly Inman (Roger) and Charlene Morris; sisters-in-law Bev Cleveland (Hal), Sandy Robbins and Patty King; and brothers-in-law Glen Colpaert and Kevin Perry (Jane).
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; sister Karen Colpaert (Glen); and brother-in-law Robert Morris.
Steve loved God and was so thankful for the gift of salvation. He lived a full life and had many activities: visited all 50 states, antique clock collector, registered clock maker, computer systems engineer, home design and renovation, farming, and he was a very accomplished cook. He and Marlena loved to grow flowers, especially petunias. Steve as a huge fan of the Indiana Hoosiers and always “suited up” for their games. Unfortunately, he often said, ”Next year for sure!”
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, at Meacham Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery with military rites provided by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard. Steve’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Visiting hours are Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Youth of Fellowship Baptist Church.
