Trapped in car

A Berne man and Geneva woman were hospitalized after their vehicle went off county road 700 East and flipped into a stream Sunday morning, trapping the two inside until help arrived around 11:30 a.m.

Calvin Huss, 80, was driving north on county road 700 East near county road 200 South when his 2007 Ford Focus went off the east side of the road for an unknown reason, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. 

His vehicle went into a ditch and the driver’s side scraped a culvert. It then overturned and came to a stop on its roof in a stream.

Both Calvin Huss and his passenger, 80-year-old Lorene Huss, were stuck in the vehicle until someone passing by found them. Water began to fill the vehicle, but the Husses were able to keep their heads above the surface, according to the report.

Calvin Huss was transported by air to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne and Lorene Huss was transported by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital of Muncie. The vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.



Intersection collision

An Illinois woman drove into the vehicle a Portland teen was driving at the intersection of county roads 100 North and 300 East about 1:20 p.m. Saturday. 

Erika A. Jaimes, 32, Arlington Heights, Illinois, was stopped in a 2014 Honda Odyssey on county road 100 North at the intersection as 17-year-old Kyzer L. Grabner of Portland was driving north on county road 300 East in a 2013 Ford Taurus. Jaimes told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she stopped at the intersection and didn’t realize it was a two-way stop, so she continued forward. (Grabner told police Jaimes never stopped.) The Honda Jaimes was driving struck the Ford, which left the road and hit a pole.

Both vehicles were towed, with damage estimated between $25,000 and $50,000. The vehicle Jaimes was driving is registered to Jesus R. Alvillar of Fort Recovery, Ohio, and the vehicle Grabner was driving is registered to Scott R. Muhlenkamp of Portland.



Windshield broken

A Redkey woman’s windshield broke after an object fell off the trailer in front of her while driving on Indiana 67 about 6:35 a.m. Monday.

Angel M. Cox, 18, was driving her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix northeast on Indiana 67 just west of county road 500 West behind a Chevy Silverado when something flew off the Chevy’s trailer and hit Cox’s windshield, breaking it. The Chevy continued northeast without stopping.

Cox’s vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Pole hit

An unknown driver crashed into a pole on county road 500 East and fled the scene about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The driver was traveling at an unsafe speed north on the road near Treaty Line Road when the 2002 Honda Accord they were driving left the road, hitting a pole and rolling onto its top. The driver fled the scene, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report.

Registration for the vehicle expired in 2020, and it was false and fictitious. The vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Deer hit

A Bryant man struck a deer with his vehicle while driving on State Line Road about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Jason R. Icenogle, 45, was driving his 2010 General Motors Sierra south on State Line Road near Indiana 67 about 7 p.m. Sunday when a deer ran into the roadway. Icenogle’s vehicle struck the animal, breaking Icenogle’s headlight and fender.

Damage is estimated at less than $1,000.
