Obituary
Joseph “Joe” Schmit of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on Dec. 13, 2021.
He was born at home on May 7, 1944, in Detroit to the late Victor O. and Kathleen Marie (Armitage) Schmit.
They moved to the family farm in Bryant, Indiana, when Joe was 2 years old. Joe enjoyed his career in Indianapolis, working for several architectural firms doing contract documents and construction administration, before retiring to Florida. Joe was active in the Pike Township Lions Club and was awarded Lion of the Year and the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Phu Bai, Vietnam, with the 131st Aviation Company “Night Hawks.”
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Vicki (Kern) Schmit; siblings Frank (Debbie), Eugene (June), Jerome, Esther (Bill), Patricia (Dennis), Michael (Barbara), Phillip (Cecilia), Paul and Janice; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Victor, Robert, Mary Ann (Chezem) and Kay Ellen (Price).
A visitation for Joseph will be held Monday, Dec. 27, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Ave. East, Bradenton, Florida. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3100 26th St. West, Bradenton, Florida. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 1 p.m. at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 Florida 72, Sarasota, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Joseph Food Pantry, 2704 33rd Ave. West, Bradenton, FL 34205, in Joe’s memory.
