A company with local ties has won another award.
The Federal Association of the German Glass Industry presented Ardagh Glass Packaging with the “Product Innovation in Glass” award at the November Aktionsforum Glasverpackung recently.
The award was for the company’s Hitchcock Juice Collection bottle produced at its facility in Nienburg, Germany. Ardagh operates glass manufacturing facilities in Dunkirk and Winchester.
Ardagh produces bottles for Hitchcock’s Imperial Orange, Golden Grapefruit, Royal Pineapple, Ultimate Mango and Deepdark Cranberry products.
Judges for the award said: “The Hitchcock Juice Collection exudes high quality through both the content and the packaging quality. Hitchcock have continued to use the iconic and distinctive bottle shape in the new collection, developing the design with a larger bottle in blue glass. The simple label design with the fruit symbol completes the well-thought-out product innovation.”
BBB names
Rick Walz has been selected to become the new president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau that serves 23 counties in northern Indiana.
Walz currently serves as the organization’s chief operating officer. He will take over his new duties Jan. 1.
A Fort Wayne resident, Walz graduated from Northern Kentucky University and worked in sales, marketing and management prior to joining the BBB in 2017.
“Rick has already improved all areas of the Operation as V.P,” said BBB board chair Tom Antisdel in a press release. “We look forward to Rick increasing the relevance of the BBB mission and providing even more value to the member companies who continue to do business the right way.”
LifeStream recognized
LifeStream Services was recently recognized as a Bronze COVID Stops Here workplace.
The designation recognized LifeStream for reaching a 70% vaccination rate. (The overall rate in Indiana is 46.9% for Hoosier adults 18 and older.)
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Wellness Council of Indiana are promoting the COVID Stops Here campaign as a way to celebrate workplaces that are leading the fight to stop COVID-19 – and to encourage more organizations to join their ranks.
“It’s become clear that the COVID-19 vaccine is Indiana’s best pathway to recovery,” said Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar. “Employers have an essential role to play and we’re pleased to recognize those organizations making it a priority for the betterment of all.”
Holcomb appoints
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb recently appointed a new member to the Indiana University board of trustees.
Holcomb announced the appointment of Cindy Lucchese to fill the vacancy on the board following the death of Melanie S. Walker in July. Lucchese is an IU graduate who serves as chief strategy officer for Penske Entertainment.
“Cindy Lucchese has amassed an impressive career in finance and leadership throughout Indiana,” Holcomb said. “I have full confidence that she will bring those same invaluable skills to IU’s Board of Trustees …”
Also, Ivy Tech Community College of Fort Wayne and Warsaw has named Eric Allmon as dean for its school of business, logistics and supply chain and the school of public affairs and social services.
IWU gets grant
The National Science Foundation recently awarded Indiana Wesleyan University a $1.3-million S-STEM grant from the National Science Foundation.
The grant is the largest the university has ever received from the foundation. It will provide scholarships of up to $40,000 over four years to undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and math programs.
“Gateway courses during the first year of a science major are often barriers to the successful completion of a STEM degree,” said assistant professor of chemistry Joshua Ostrander. “This NSF award will help us leverage existing student support mechanisms at IWU to help address the ‘leaky pipeline’ of STEM majors common to many institutions.”
Purdue finds
Researchers at Purdue University have mapped the biosynthetic pathway of an anti-cancer compound found in thyme and oregano.
The compound is found in extremely small amounts in the herbs, a Purdue press release said. It must be increased significantly or synthesized for drug development.
“These plants contain important compounds, but the amount is very low and extraction won’t be enough,” said Natalia Dudareva, a professor of biochemistry in Purdue’s College of Agriculture, who co-led the project. “By understanding how these compounds are formed, we open a path to engineering plants with higher levels of them or to synthesizing the compounds in microorganisms for medical use.”
Union requested
More than 1,500 graduate student workers at Indiana University’s Bloomington campus have formally requested the school allow an election to form a labor union, WFYI in Indianapolis reported.
The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition-United Electrical Workers says it hopes to get better wages and benefits along with other changes.
“This certainly caught the university’s attention but, still, there was no indication that they were willing to commit to ending fees for graduate workers,” Cole Nelson, a member of the coalition, told WFYI. “Let alone raising our pay, ensuring that we’re making a decent standard of living, making sure we’re able to pay rent and all the rest of it. We recognize that the best and most effective path forward is to establish a union so we can have an official bargaining relationship with the university.”
Starcom selected
McDonald’s on Wednesday announced the selection of Starcom as its lead national media agency for U.S. business.
Starcom is part of the Publicis Groupe media network, with which McDonald’s already had a relationship for customer data analytics and digital marketing. The deal with Starcom will add national media buying and planning to the Publicis portfolio with McDonald’s.
“Since we started working with Publicis last year, they have demonstrated a deep understanding of McDonald’s consumers, real clout in the digital marketplace and a proven track record of innovating toward our digital ambitions,” said McDonald’s USA chief marketing and digital customer experience officer Tariq Hassan in a press release.
