Jay swimmers finish perfect

A strong showing by the 9-and-10-year-old girls helped cap a perfect season.

Three girls combined to win every event in their age group as the Jay County Summer Swim Team finished off an undefeated year with a 791-247 victory against Yorktown on Tuesday at Portland Waterpark.

The win gave Jay County an 8-0 record for 2021, which was the first year the team had competed against Yorktown.

Elly Byrum, Maria Laux and Kenna Arnold paced the girls 9-and-10-year-old division by winning two events each. Byrum won the long freestyle and short freestyle races; Laux was first in the butterfly and backstroke; and Arnold beat the field in the individual medley and breaststroke.

Addisyn Champ (8-and-younger), Lauren Fisher (13-14-year-old), Eliza Bader (15-and-older) and Kyle Sanders (15-and-older) were all triple-event winners. Champ won the long freestyle, IM and backstroke; Fisher handled the backstroke, breaststroke and short freestyle; Bader took first in the long freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke; and Sanders topped the competition in the open IM, short freestyle and open 200 freestyle.

Sawyer Hemmelgarn, Tuck Hemmelgarn, Ben Fisher, Kaitlyn Fisher, Carson Westgerdes, Aryan Montes, Morgan DeHoff, Mara Bader, Konner Sommers and Nico Minnich were all dual winners.

Earning single wins were Anna Fisher, Sam Benirschke, Colton Glassford, Brooklyn Byrum, Sam Wiggins, Aubrey Millspaugh and Emily Dues.

Jay County returns to the pool Saturday as it hosts the Wabash Valley Conference Championships. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
