JCDC approves

Jay County Development Corporation on Tuesday allocated economic development funds from Bluff Point Wind Energy Center to be used to fund a competition focused on spurring local business development.

Launch Jay, a “Shark Tank”-style event in which local entrepreneurs would pitch their ideas with the opportunity to win funding, is slated for October.

After a discussion about the details of the event, the JCDC board approved $50,000 it was allocated from the wind farm economic development funds to be used for prizes for the competition over the course of the next five years.

Use of the funds is contingent on approval from Jay County Commissioners and Jay County Council. (Commissioner Brian McGalliard, who is also a JCDC member, proposed that if for any reason all of the funding is not used for Launch Jay, further decisions about use of the money will be left to JCDC.)

Intersection collision

Four local residents were taken to the hospital after a Hartford City man drove through the stop sign at the intersection of county roads 1150 West and 500 South about 1:40 p.m. Friday.

Coty L. Bunch, 29, Dunkirk, was driving a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville north on county road 1150 West.

He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office as he began to pass the intersection with county road 500 South, a westbound 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 76-year-old Melvin D. Jackson, blew past the stop sign. Bunch tried to swerve out of the way but collided his vehicle with the Avalanche, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Jackson told deputies he didn’t know what happened at the accident or if he stopped at the intersection. (There is a stop for 500 South at the intersection, but there is not a stop for 1150 West.)

Bunch and his three Redkey passengers, 53-year-old Teresa Nemeth and 7-year-olds Able and Kaden Blankenship, were transported to IU Health Ball Memorial of Muncie. Both vehicles were towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.

Turning accident

Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500 after a Portland resident’s vehicle struck another vehicle about 12:14 p.m. Saturday.

Courtnee S. Taylor, 27, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado north on county road 300 East. Taylor stopped behind a 2005 Buick LeSabre, driven by 59-year-old John M. Kelly of Portland, at the intersection with Indiana 26. Taylor later told Jay County Sheriff’s Office Kelly started to continue forward and then stopped. Taylor said she was watching for oncoming traffic and was unable to stop before hitting the back of Kelly’s vehicle.

Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
