A couple of chamber events are just around the corner.
Jay County Chamber of Commerce has announced that it will hold its Shop Local Jay! campaign Aug. 2 through 7. Its “Jay County Spotlight” radio broadcast is scheduled for Aug. 5 in conjunction with the campaign.
Shop Local Jay! is an effort to highlight local business, with the chamber providing “shop local” stickers and community members offered the chance to win chamber gift certificates. There will also be additional promotion of specials participating businesses will be offering.
The radio spotlight event will coincide with the effort, offering businesses the opportunity to highlight themselves on a live broadcast from the chamber office.
Funding available
Applications are open for the state’s Next Level Jobs Employer Training Grant.
The State of Indiana started accepting applications for the program Friday. Employers are eligible for up to $50,000, with an allotment of $5,000 per employee. Eligible occupations include advanced manufacturing, agriculture, building and construction, health and life sciences, information technology and business services, and transportation and logistics.
Employers can apply for the grant at nextleveljobs.org.
Scout studying
Scout Clean Energy is working with South Dakota Game Fish and Parks and Western EcoSystems Technology on a sharp-tailed grouse study to learn about the effects of wind farm siting, construction and operations on the birds.
Scout, which owns and operates Bitter Ridge Wind Farm in Jay County, announced the partnership June 30. The study will run over three years, including one year of pre-construction and two years of post-construction.
“The overall goal of this research study is to determine if a wind farm may have any effects on sharp-tailed grouse habitat use, survival and reproduction,” said Scout CEO Michael Rucker in a press release. “The study … will be important for developers to better understand the bird’s daily activities.”
Retiring
Phil Reaser of 90.3 WBCL Radio in Fort Wayne has announced he will retire at the end of August.
Reaser, who has been in radio for more than 60 years including 25 at WBCL, has been Billboard Magazine’s Radio Personality of the Year for country music twice. He has previously worked in Cleveland, Memphis, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Phoenix.
“I want to thank the entire WBCL staff for a very rich and delightful experience in being a part of the ministry of WBCL for the last 25 years,” he said in a press release. “I pray God’s richest blessings upon WBCL’s ministry, the staff and management, and each and every listener.”
IU partnering
Scientists at Purdue University, Indiana University, the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis are partnering to form the new Center for Quantum Technologies.
The new venture, led by Purdue, will be established through the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research program in an effort to bring scientists together in the applied research field. Plans call for industry partners to provide research funding.
“The Center for Quantum Technologies will be a tremendous complement to our ongoing activities in the IU Quantum Science and Engineering Center,” said chair of the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physics David Baxter in a press release.
Ardagh partners
Ardagh Group is partnering with Amsterdam-based 2Wine to create a new wine can for its product.
Ardagh, which operates glass manufacturing facilities in Dunkirk and Winchester, is producing 250-milliliter (about 8.5-ounce) cans for 2Wine’s Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot-Cabernet rosé and an Italian sparkling wine.
“The stunning 2Wine cans really are a case of ‘all class,’” said Adriana Escobar, Ardagh Metal Packaging’s product manager, in a press release. “We’re proud to see more and more customers embracing our innovative Wine Can, reaching new markets and exciting the end consumer with trendy new options for their summer fun.”
To announce
NextEra Energy will release its second-quarter 2021 financial results on July 23.
The results will be announced in a press release at NextEraEnergy.com/FinancialResults. There will also be an investor presentation with NetEra chairman and CEO Jim Robo at 9 a.m. July 23 that will be live-streamed at the same website.
NextEra owns and operates Bluff Point Wind Energy Center in Jay and Randolph counties.
Lilly teaming
Eli Lilly is teaming with Verge Genomics to pursue new treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Verge will pick up $25 million up-front as part of the deal and could collect up to $694 million in the future, Fierce Biotech reported. The three-year deal will involve Verge using its drug discovery platform with Lilly to choose up to four to continue with in clinical development and commercialization.
“We have a wealth of compelling targets with strong genetic support, said Verge co-founder and CEO Alice Zhang We picked two to focus on to develop to the clinic, but there are a number of promising targets that we don’t have the capacity to prosecute ourselves,” Verge CEO and co-founder Alice Zhang told Fierce Biotech.
Subway refreshing
Subway announced Tuesday that it will be making major changes to its menu.
The sandwich chain will launch its Eat Fresh Refresh in all of its locations Tuesday. The changes include updates to the menu with new ingredients, new sandwiches and new bread options (artisan Italian and hearty multigrain).
“Our new culinary team is delivering monumental updates to the entire core menu,” said Subway North American president Trevor Haynes in a press release. “The Eat Fresh Refresh make Subway better than ever with freshly made, crave-able and delicious sandwiches to excite new and returning guests.”
Yum! joins
Yum! Brands on Wednesday announced that it has joined the Publicis Media Once & For All Coalition.
The coalition is an effort to “build a more equitable advertising ecosystem for ethnically diverse media suppliers, content creators and production partners, with an initial focus on Black and Hispanic platforms.”
Yum!, which owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, plans to increase diverse representation in its businesses and support diverse-owned companies by increasing its national advertising spending and forming partnerships with them.
