LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — It took more than a dozen tries, but a former Indians has his first win for his newest team.
Nick Thwaits, a 2019 Fort Recovery High School graduate, got plenty of offense from his teammates and held the opponents in check as the Lake Elsinore Storm topped the Visalia Rawhide 14-3 Tuesday at The Diamond.
It was the Thwaits’ first win for the Storm after registering an 0-6 record in his previous dozen starts.
Thwaits, a 15th-round pick by the San Diego Padres, struck out the first two batters he faced against the Rawhide, the Low-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He then got A.J. Vukovich to fly out to left for the final out of the frame.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, right-hander fanned Elian Miranda for his third strikeout in four batters, then retired the next two batters as he was perfect through two frames.
Thwaits issued his first walk with one out in the top of the third. A triple and sacrifice fly gave the Rawhide (14-47) their first two runs of the game, but by then the Storm (27-34) already had 12 runs on the board thanks to four in the first inning and eight more in the second.
Following a one-out walk in the top of the fourth inning, Thwaits retired the final five batters he faced. The two-time Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year gave up two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out five in five innings of work to finally get a tally in the win column this season.
Fifty-seven of the 86 pitches he threw went for strikes.
Thwaits is now 1-6 in 13 appearances, including 11 starts. He has a 6.51 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 20 walks in 55 1/3 innings.
Cullen Dana tossed two perfect innings in relief of Thwaits. Jose Garcia allowed one run on four hits in the eighth inning, and Jason Reynolds tossed a scoreless ninth to cap the win.
Jarryd Dale led the Storm with four singles. Robert Hassell III followed with a double and two singles, and Brandon Valenzuela contributed two hits and four RBIs.
Euribel Angeles tripled, while Joshua Mears hit a three-run home run, his 10th of the season, as part of the Storm’s eight-run second inning.
Sean Guilbe, Angel Solarte and Matthew Acosta all hit doubles as Lake Elsinore racked up 16 hits.
